The overarching goal of current longevity research is to extend the healthy years—the years free from illness and disability—rather than simply adding more years to life. It becomes evident that medical advances have successfully increased human life expectancy, primarily by reducing early childhood mortality and combating infectious diseases.
However, there appears to be a biological ceiling; the maximum human lifespan is roughly capped around 120 years. The oldest verified person on record was Jeanne Calment, who died at 122. This suggests a natural limit to lifespan, beyond which scientific progress has yet to make a significant impact.
