While most people are familiar with and accustomed to seeing the "Anarchy" symbol of the Anarcho-Capitalists, many are unfamiliar with the symbol used by the alliance of the libertarian left below.

In its classical usage, left-libertarianism is a synonym for anti-authoritarian varieties of left-wing politics, e.g. libertarian socialism, which includes anarchism and libertarian Marxism, among others. Left-libertarianism can also refer to political positions associated with academic philosophers.

In the United States, the word "libertarian" has become associated with right-libertarianism since the 1960's. However, until then political usage of the word was associated exclusively with anti-capitalism and in most parts of the world such an association still predominates.

"Libertarian (Latin: liber, "free") is a collection of political philosophies and movements that uphold liberty as a core principle. Libertarians seek to maximize political freedom and autonomy, emphasizing freedom of choice, voluntary association, individual judgment, and self-ownership. Libertarianism is an extreme laissez-faire political philosophy advocating only minimal state intervention in the lives of citizens.

Among the views of the Left-Libertarian spectrum are the Democratic Socialist, the Libertarian Socialist, the Libertarian Marxist, the Libertarian Communist, and the Geo-Libertarianist.

Democratic Socialism in some forms conforms to the Left-Libertarian viewpoint, but is not a traditionally accepted viewpoint in the Libertarian Party. The Left-Libertarian Socialist would however, have more in common politically with a Democratic Socialist than they would with a Right-Libertarian on a number of issues.

The Right-Libertarian viewpoints more familiar to and most associated with the viewpoints of the Libertarian National Party are the viewpoints of the Natural-Rights Libertarian and the Consequentialist Libertarian, but there has been a resurgence in the study and understanding of Libertarian ideals. Understanding the two main branches of the Right-Libertarian ideology, the Natural-Rights Libertarian and the Consequentialist Libertarian, may help you to understand the struggle within the Libertarian Party.
