The Plan!

in #lifestyle7 years ago

In the previous article, we showed and talked about our land and cabin purchase and a little about switching from dependence on the public utilities and minimizing our life. It was a very basic overview.

Today we will get a little deeper into our thought process and planning.

When we started the journey to live off grid we had very little understanding and knowledge of exactly what it would take. We had done some research on alternative power (solar and wind) and ways to have water and a way to dispose of our waste (black and gray water).
The biggest obstacle was there was so little information out on the internet and public library that it made our job to get the information very hard. Most stuff we found was showing someone's cabin in the mountains that was a weekend or hunting place. No real plans or how-to articles. It was a bit disheartening to find nothing substantial to help us.

So we broke it down into categories and researched each part.

  1. Water - You can't live without it.
  2. Waste- How to deal with our human waste.
  3. Electricity - To supply our power for our modern techno needs.
  4. Heat - What would be the best way.
  5. Making the cabin home!

First and foremost I wanted to be LEGAL so not to draw unwanted attention to us and if we were reported to the authorities we would be good to go. This is the most important thing in living a life that's outside of the normal.

Not all of the above-listed items happened in that order BUT we did get the basics done pretty much in that order.

When talking to the different county and state authorities and trying to explain what we wanted to do, was probably the most challenging part of our whole journey. Ninety percent had no clue about the type lifestyle we wanted to live. With us trying to explain it and not fully knowing the proper terminology also made it interesting.
That is why we broke it down so we could study each area as best we could before contacting each different area county and state representative.

Most were very curious and overall helpful. Together we all learned from our many hours of study and questioning the right people.

It is amazing how each state, county, and city has its own set of rules and how you must ensure you are abiding by each of them.
To keep each post into easy to digest we will keep them short and break down each part of the list above.
Please continue to check in daily for the next post. We will try and keep it interesting as we get our steemit blog caught up to today and how we live on our off-grid homestead today.

Thank you so much for the intrest in our lifestyle.
