Zlatan Ibile, one of Nigeria’s finest hip hop sensation got social media agog with the release of his hit single titled “Yeye Boyfriend”. The title of the song connotes that there are good, bad and ugly boyfriends as long as every relationship is concerned. The “yeye” signifies a level of badness that is second to none as the case may be.
The song isn’t even where the major uproar is. The major uproar is in the fact that Zlatan had gone on Twitter to incite what I would call a competition of “yeye boyfriends” where he requested that ladies share their escapades with their yeye boyfriends and win an iPhone 11. According to him, the tweet with the highest retweets wins the phone.
Last night I was on TWITTER not tweeting but reading tweets from ladies who supposedly had yeye boyfriends. These ladies shared their experiences with their yeye boyfriends and there was one common factor I could deduce from these wide range of experiences. First of which is the fact that many of these ladies were actually yeye girlfriends. I would tell you why…
A lady shared a story of her yeye boyfriend particularly how irresponsible he was. According to her, she comes to visit him on weekends and whenever she is going to come, he calls and tells her to call at the market and get foodstuffs for the house. She does just that (with her money by the way) and never gets a refund. Worst still, when she goes back home, he gives her 1,000 Nigerian Naira as a sort of compensation or “thanks for coming”. He repeats this routine over and over again and the lady in question probably saw nothing wrong in it until the iPhone 11 bounty came calling. This is a clear case of a yeye girlfriend calling out a boyfriend who is not yeye but wise. Wise in the sense that dude wants to save his money at the lady’s expense but she becomes so daft to see.
Many breakups are looming as a result of this competition on Twitter. After Friday night, lots of alignment and realignment would be done. A lot of hearts would be shattered even the more. Imagine a relationship still struggling to stand on its foot and then all of a sudden, a competition that drags the innocent relationship in the mud shows up. How awful?
It would even be that most ladies would deliberately cook up stories that are pleasing to the ears just so they can gain empathy from Twitter users and win lots of retweets. Worst still, even single ladies would cook up stories that never existed just so the iPhone11 would be theirs. But the undue competition this almighty iPhone11 bring leaves much to be desired. The competition to acquire it gets more intense as the day goes by.
But what happens after the competition and one fortunate lady with a yeye boyfriend wins the iPhone11 and another lady who disses her current boyfriend all in the name of iPhone11 loses? Would the Twitter community or better still the initiator of the competition Zlatan come to her rescue? Good question!
Well, this is me patiently waiting for who eventually wins the iPhone11 and hoping that her boyfriend clears the bush paths of his heart and find a place in that heart to forgive her.
