Hello HIVEs!
Still travelling in Santa Catarina (Brazil) and back by the sea, we set off on a discovery tour of secluded beaches on the coast of Santa Catarina (Brazil). This time we deliberately chose the land side with a view of Florianópolis. At the beginning of November, it was deserted here due to the persistent rain. And yet there were considerable traces of our civilisation on the beach. Plastic rubbish! Either I didn't notice anything like this before or the emission of plastic in the sea has increased considerably. A large proportion of the flotsam consists of plastic.
Immer noch in Santa Catarina (Brasilien) unterwegs und wieder zurück am Meer, begaben wir uns auf Entdeckungstour nach einsamen Stränden an der Küste von Santa Catarina (Brasilien). Wir wählten diesmal bewusst die Landseite mit Blick auf Florianópolis. Anfang November war es hier wegen des anhaltenden Regens, menschenleer. Und doch gab es erhebliche Spuren unserer Zivilisation am Strand. Plastikmüll! Entweder ist mir früher so etwas nicht aufgefallen oder die Emission von Plastik im Meer hat erheblich zugenommen. Das Treibgut besteht zu einem Großen Teil aus Kunststoff.
On the one hand, the sight annoyed me. On the other hand, it stimulated my creativity. I thought about how I could draw attention to this deplorable state of affairs with a light painting. Along the lines of: Hey guys, this dirt is avoidable!
Einerseits ärgerte mich dieser Anblick. Andererseits regte es meine Kreativität an. Ich überlegte, wie ich auf diesen Misstand mit einem Lightpainting Aufmerksamkeit verleihen kann. Nach dem Motto: Hey Leute, dieser Schmutz ist vermeidbar!
The crab in the picture below was certainly not happy about the plastic waste either. Fish and seabirds also ingest plastic waste with their food. When we eat seafood and fish, the plastic waste ends up back on our plates. You might think that's fair. But not everyone who eats fish is contributing to the pollution of the oceans. So my picture is an appeal to people's common sense: Think about what you buy and what waste you want to leave behind and where!
Die Krabbe im Bild unten freute der Plastikmüll bestimmt auch nicht. Auch Fische und Seevögel nehmen den Plastikmüll mit der Nahrung auf. Beim Verzehr von Meeresfrüchten und Fisch landet der Plastikmüll dann wieder auf unserem Teller. Könnte man jetzt gerecht finden. Aber nicht jeder der einen Fisch verzehrt, beteiligt sich an der Verschmutzung der Meere. Also soll mein Bild ein Appell an die Vernunft der Menschen sein: Überlegt was ihr einkauft und was ihr wo an Abfall hinterlassen wollt!
We had rented a small beach house on a small private beach via Airbnb. There were two small fishing boats on a lawn that belonged to the caretaker. Based on this, I developed the idea of letting these boats float in a sea of plastic. Of course, as already described in the first two posts from the beach in Santa Catarina, there was also the problem of permanent lighting on all the paths on this property. As we were the only guests on the site that day, I asked the caretaker if he could switch off the lights for one night. He could!
Wir hatten über Airbnb ein kleines Strandhaus an einem kleinen Privatstrand gemietet. Dort lagen zwei kleine Fischerboote auf einer Wiese, die dem Hausmeister gehörten. Darauf aufbauend entwickelte ich die Idee, diese Boote in einem Plastikmeer schwimmen zu lassen. Natürlich gab es, wie bereits in den ersten beiden Posts vom Strand in Santa Catarina beschrieben, auch auf diesem Grundstück das Problem der permanenten Beleuchtung aller Wege. Da wir an diesem Tag die einzigen Gäste auf dem Gelände waren, fragte ich den Hausmeister, ob er das Licht für eine Nacht ausschalten könne. Er konnte!
The Tool
To realise the light painting, I attached a PET bottle to a torch with a blue filter. I always have some duc tape with me for such cases. I fitted the torch with a cable switch.
Um das Lightpainting zu realisieren, baute ich eine PET-Flasche an eine Taschenlampe mit blauen Filter. Etwas Klebeband habe ich für solche Fälle immer dabei. Die Taschenlampe rüstete ich mit einem Kabelschalter aus.
The Set
Once I had positioned and started the camera, I tried to recreate the sea by briefly switching on the lamp with the PET bottle in different positions. The PET bottles should be recognisable in the picture.
It was a gruelling exercise to walk the surface with the tool either bent over or in a duck walk. Not for the back of an old man like me. The cover picture shows the result of this strenuous exercise.
Nachdem ich die Kamera positioniert und gestartet hatte, versuchte ich durch kurzes Einschalten der Lampe mit der PET-Flasche in verschieden Positionen, das Meer nachzubilden. Die PET-Flaschen sollten im Bild zu erkennen sein.
Es war eine kraftzehrende Übung entweder Gebückt oder im Entengang die Fläche mit dem Tool abzulaufen. Nichts für den Rücken eines alten Mannes, wie mich. Das Titelbild zeigt das Ergebnis dieser kräftezehrenden Aktion.

What Is Light Painting?
Light painting is a unique art form. As a rule, the darkness is illuminated by the artist with various light sources and traces of light are painted into the picture with various lighting tools. Various techniques are used, such as camera rotation or other movements of the camera during exposure. The creative possibilities are almost unlimited. When using ND filters, this technique can also be used in daylight. All images were taken during a single exposure. Apart from denoising, sharpening, cropping and possibly adjusting the white balance, the images are not processed on the computer.
Lichtmalerei ist eine einzigartige Kunstform. In der Regel wird die Dunkelheit mit diversen Lichtquellen vom Künstler ausgeleuchtet und Lichtspuren mit diversen Lichtwerkzeugen ins Bild gemalt. Dabei kommen verschiedene Techniken zum Einsatz, wie Kamerarotation oder andere Bewegungen der Kamera während der Belichtung. Die kreativen Möglichkeiten sind nahezu unbegrenzt. Bei Einsatz von ND-Filtern kann diese Technik auch bei Tageslicht angewand werden. Alle Bilder wurden während einer einzigen Belichtung aufgenommen. Abgesehen vom Entrauschen, Schärfen, Beschneiden und eventuellem Anpassen des Weißabgleichs werden die Bilder nicht am Computer bearbeitet.

:( It's a shame about pollution from plastic waste!... Here in my country (Venezuela) practically all the rivers and beaches in the central-northern region are contaminated by that type of waste (and that's not counting the chemicals released by companies and wastewater from settlements)... So, it is a difficult problem to assimilate...
But... on the other hand, very interesting and well done (as always) your light painting work today!...

Thank you my friend! In Germany is the pollution from plastic not so strong. But I can see it will be more and more.
