A favourite photo of mine taken overlooking Batman Avenue in Melbourne. Before I get into the image itself I'll mention that this is nothing to do with a fictional vigilante billionaire that likes dressing up as a bat. But as one of the founders of Melbourne, John Batman. A man of questionable dealings with the Aboriginal land custodians, but also a man that our city could have been named after (Batmania).
Now that the history lesson is out of the way, this is one of my favourite photos because it is exactly what I set out to get, and it took planning and careful post processing to achieve. Something that is not always possible for a landscape photographer when you have to deal with whatever conditions you have at the time. I won't include the camera settings because this image is a blend of about 15 exposures over a period of 2 hours. Over that time I didn't move the camera's position. I took images before sunset, at sunset, after sunset and at night to capture the different elements needed. Such as the light on the trees before sunset, the colour in the clouds at sunset, and the lights in the buildings and multiple car trail exposures at night.

Good inspiration
Thanks heaps!
@originalworks
This is an incredible work of art @kieranstone. Very impressive photography techniques.
The details are exquisite. :)
Thanks heaps!
Nice shot @keiranstone. I would love to get to Melbourne to shoot it. So much culture there
It's a beautiful city to photograph. With the best coffee in the world too ;)
I was down there many years ago, but wasnt as into photography as i am these days. It was more a shopping trip for the wife hahahaha
the picture is realy nice 👍
Thanks!
Wow, that's truely a masterpiece! Thanks for the description, it's amazing, how much efforts you put into it, to achieve that it looks so brilliant. May I ask which program you used for putting the different exposures together to one photo?
Thanks! I use Photoshop to blend the exposures together :)
Do they also have The Joker street? :D nice shot mate :)
I was going to be clever and say yes and link to Google maps of where it is but...turns out there is no Joker Street in Melbourne!
The light in this image is so surreal. I love it
15 frames blended by hand or by photoshops algorithm?
Blended by hand with masks and blend modes :)
awesome, respect++
Interesting work!
Very crisp image and full colours. Combining multiple long exposures from different times of day could be something to try myself as well.
Congrats for the capture and thanks for the idea!
regards,
Esa
It's a lot of fun and very satisfying when it all comes together :)
It is, isn’t it!
A lot of effort, but look what an amazing photo it produced. Well done you!
The real effort is not getting distracted and moving the camera to take a photo of something else ;)
Hahah I can see that would be a struggle. Keep the great content coming. It's really awesome.
Great post! Come with me!
Thanks!
Love the technique - the day-to-night combination works excellently for the composition!
Cheers! Have you done anything like this?
I was trying to think of that when I saw your photo. I don't remember doing exactly this for a cityscape (tried it on a landscape recently), but I did a day-night transition picture in Pittsburgh that combined different elements over a few hours. Needs more experimentation. I love the technique, though it's a bit of a grey area for authenticity when it comes to nature photos.
Nice shot. Your right about the patience required!
Thank you. It's been a while since I was that patient
Yes I have a lot of patience out in remote places; just not in the city .
Wow! Don't you love it when a plan comes together!?
That's an A Team reference (tv show from the 80's).
I thought you used a ND filter in the day to get the effect. It worked out well as it doesn't look Photoshopped and it's subtle.
Thanks! It's not a particularly busy road and most cars don't have their lights on until after dark, so a single exposure using a ND filter wouldn't have worked in this case.
I know the A-Team but never watched the A-Team :)
LOL
I'm sure the A-Team is a washed reference. I'm glad you at least aware of them. Lol

This looks like a stock photo. Wow
A stock photo?? It's not that bad is it?
Lol
I meant it in a good way :D
