January 2018 becomes a special month in the world of astronomy. Beginning Supermoon on January 1 and 2, and at the end of this month, January 31, a lunar eclipse occurs.

This eclipse is rare because it last occurred March 31, 1866, or 152 years ago. The late-January eclipse configuration is very distinctive, presenting three combinations in a natural phenomenon, called by the US Space Agency as a trifecta cosmic phenomenon.
What is a supermoon?
Supermoon usually lasts every one to two years, when the full moon coincides with its nearest point to Earth during its monthly orbit.
Because the moon has an elliptical orbit, one side - called perigee - is about 48,280 km (30,000 miles) closer to Earth than the other side (apogee).

As the sun, moon, and earth are lined up as the moon orbits Earth, it's known as syzygy (definitely something you want to keep in the back pocket for the next Scrabble game).

When this Earth-Moon-Sun system occurs with the perigee side of the moon facing us, and the moon occurs on the opposite side of the Earth from the sun, we get what is called perigee-syzygy.

It causes the moon to look much bigger up to 14 percent and 30 percent brighter than usual, and this is called a supermoon - or more technically, perigee month.

What is a blue moon?
This is a rare moment when the full moon appears twice in a calendar month.
The lunar month lasts about 29.53059 days, while the calculation of the moons in the Christian calendar runs between 28 and 31 days.
Sometimes, this means the full moon can be seen twice in a month - the so-called blue moon.

What is a blood moon?
at the time of the total lunar eclipse occurs Some sunlight is still up to the moon, but when the sun's first reflection penetrates the earth's atmosphere, the atmosphere filters most of the blue light of the sun, so the moon will look red.

When is the next Super Moon?
So If you miss the lunar eclipse January 31, 2018, you have to wait for 2019 Feb 19 because at that time the moon is at a distance of 356,761 from the earth.
