Meet the mantis or as scientifically call this insect, Mantis religiosa, literally is a religious priest. This name was received by the mantis because of its constant posture of an insect in ambush and guarding prey. He is very similar to the man who folded his hands in prayer.
This amazing creature has other names. For example. In Spain, it is called Caballito del Diablo (devil's horse) or muerte (death). And these names are associated with the unusual and eerie habits of the mantis.
The insects are attacked usually from an ambush, unexpectedly grab prey by their front paws and do not let go until they are completely eaten. Strong jaws allow these gluttons to devour even a relatively large victim.
The main enemies of the praying mantis are their own kind - other mantises. There are often fights for life and death between two rivals. The battles are usually very spectacular: first of all, the mantis seeks to frighten the rival, for this takes a special awesome pose - throws forward his front paws and lifts up the belly. All this can be accompanied by appropriate menacing sounds.
I had such a handsome man in the garden, although looking by its size, it was a beautiful woman. An ordinary mantis is a typical predator, mimicking the surrounding plants. Representatives of this species are not too large: 7 cm (female) and 6 cm (male).
A very interesting creature, although I do not sympathize with insects, this caused me great interest, because carefully watched me and looked with such an expression that it seemed now talking .... Mantis - the only insects that turn their heads in the direction of the look. They do not just assess the space ahead of themselves, but they also look in the direction that is interested in them, including for the back.
In addition, I immediately came to mind the movie Aliens, they are real aliens ... with a very attentive and conscious expression on the "face."
