9 steps to making Cannabutter with Kief

A little about me, I grew up in Humboldt County - Often times referred to as the Emerald Triangle or the weed capital of the world. This is a general guide on how to make cannabutter from kief, it is the simplest way - it is also not the best way and I would love if during this specific process if there is a better way to do something it could be said.

Anyways lets begin,

List of items:

Baking container (I used a pyrex, it doesn't really matter)

Kief (1-4 grams is more than enough for most of the population, I used 9 because I want to get a friend extremely high)

1 lb of unsalted butter

Cooking Pot

Non-Stick Stirring Untensil

Cheesecloth or a Coffee Filter

Mason Jar with open lid part

Refrigerator

Optional: Wax Paper

Step 1:

Prepare by setting up all your items, Getting your kief ready and measured having everything you need readily accessible during this time. Turn your oven on to 300 degrees, it'll take anywhere from 5-10 minutes for this part.

Step 2:

In my situation having my kief vacuum sealed I had to take an additional step and crumble it a little bit so it could bake/decarb properly

Step 3:

Place your kief into your baking container, some people bake their kief directly on this - I prefer keeping it on the wax paper for better results.

Step 4:

Place your baking container into the oven that is preheated to 300 degrees for 9-10 minutes, this will give it enough time to decarb. During this timeframe gather your cheesecloth and prepare your mason jar, as well as begin slowly melting your butter on the stovetop.

1 Layer of cheesecloth is usually enough. However I prepare 4 layers and do an additional strain or two. This picture is to demonstrate how to tighten down the cheesecloth over your mason jar to prevent spillage.

Step 5:

Remove your baking container from the oven leaving the lid on until you're butter is nice and melted, Some say the butter needs to reach 200 degrees F - Personally I don't believe an exact temperature is required.

Step 6:

Once the butter is fully melted, uncover your kief and prepare to add it to the pot. Once added begin stirring making sure to fully submerge the kief into the butter.

Step 7:

Pay close attention and only cook until the kief is fully mixed into the butter, use low heat or remove from heat and keep stirring if you can't see properly.

Step 8:

The Importance of straining! When you strain your successfully mixed kief butter/oil you should not see any remnants or anything accumulated at the bottom.

What happens if you don't strain:

Step 9:

Check the bottom of your mason jar, if you see alot of gunk or sunk remnants at the bottom strain it again. Until there is only a liquid in your jar, once you have reached that point place your jar in the fridge (I let mine cool down so there is no condensation). Let it harden and bam you've got your own cannabutter!
