I always think of it that way: Rotate by 180° on the complex plane and you arrive at the real numbered one. Now substract one and you're done :-)

If e is a one dimensional smooth growth proccess, then the rotation of e^i*phi is the two dimensional equivalent giving us a perfect circle :-)
