Mathematics , a Discovery or an Invention ?

in #maths8 years ago (edited)

Well before I want to start the discussion I'm not a mathematician however there is an ungoing argument for centuries , The mathematics is something we discovered and it was already there or it is an invention of human.

Well if we start with the relations of Mathematics with the other science branchs it tells us some about how the function of it works. Physichs can expand mathematics however it doesn't make the bond between them stronger. Mathematics only provide other science branches models in order to provide some understanding.

We should seperate the applied mathematics and pure mathematics from each other , because those physics formulas like getting out of results from a curvelinear integral only interests the area of physics. However it is only a method of calculation in mathematics.

as far as the laws of mathematics refer to reality, they are not certain, and as far as they are certain, they do not refer to reality. Albert Einstein

Well mathematics keeps its existance like physic rules without people discover them. As an instance eventhough we don't know the physical rules inside a black hole right now they don't stop being right there. Therefore I really think it is human ego to say something like we invented mathematics.

I think it is none. It is only a rational/logical tool rational beings can use to systematize reason and logic.

Arguably it's both. Very simplistically, you could boil mathematics down to inventing a set of axioms (the things you will assume to be true) and then discovering what you can prove to be true based on those assumptions.

Many think that this project is problematic due to Godel's Incompleteness Theorems, which show among others that axiomatic systems for mathematics , specifically those that can do basic arithmetic, cannot be both complete & consistent at the same time.

There is really no clear cut answer to the question.
Many people will tell you that math is a massive body of fiction, objects and ideas completely invented by man to describe and quantify the world around him.
still others will say that the principles of mathematics are a discovery, an ever expanding discovery at that.
It really ultimately comes down to how you choose to look at it. Neither side of the argument really seeks to invalidate the principles of mathematics, but simply differ on the inherent value of the terminology.

As an engineer, I would say it is invention. All the mathematics depends on two operations which exist in nature...addition and substraction.
But having all the letters, can you write a novel ? Well i can be wrong. Let the comic talk :)))

sir I want to say seriously I have a fear from the mathematics I am a student of Bsc and now doing it with computer science but there is also mathematics in every page of every book expect English and Hindi

Mathematics is the most powerful subject. it starts with basic calculation, Division, Multiplication, Subtraction, Addition and end up to complex level. every subject involves mathematics, Profressor Arthur Benjamin call it mathemagic instead of mathematic. i am with professor Benjamin as mathematic bring magic revolution in todays world. very nice post keep sharing @steeminator3000 Your post deserve to be upvoted & Resteemed. so Resteemed & Upvoted from my side

I do think it can be both. The language of invention vs discovery can be a fine line when it comes to this. But I think I personally would err on the side of discovery. If someone comes across a new animal, we clearly know they didn't invent it. It was there waiting to be discovered. That's an easy example because it's something you can see with your natural eye. There's many things in the universe that according to what we know, shouldn't exist. So the math/physics is there waiting for us to discover it.
Just some of my thoughts on it.

Mathematics is the language of the universe

In my view, I feel mathematics is purely logical and I don't think it was invented, it was only discovered just as the laws of physics were. Although mathematical methods could be made. Besides, mathematics is the language God used to create the universe, lol.
