I think that rather depends on how you say it. I think we are all open to the idea that a new, well articulated argument has the capability of changing our minds. It you challenge someone in a courteous manner, there needn't be any unpleasant consequences to disagreement. It is possible to respect a person who's opinion are different from your own after all.

It certainly is possible... But there's an abundance of people who are incapable of accepting a view that contradicts their own. Look up cognitive dissonance. Very interesting psychological phenomenon.
You may well be right, but starting from a position where you have the highest chance of a positive outcome (and that does not include choosing not to challenge;)) is surely the most rational approach. Some pragmatism may be helpful when encountering a wall. Can't win them all and nor should you be able to.....that would mean you were always right! ;)
