Hello everyone! It’s Lucy here. Last month, I told you all about where to go in Big Sur, California and today I’ll be talking about the Mexico’s beautiful capital city.
From leafy colonial streets to an exploding culinary and arts scene, Mexico City is having a moment and casting off its former image as a gritty city. Tales of hidden mezcal bars and off-the-beaten-path taco joints had me hopping on a Friday night flight from New York to find out more! Here’s where to stay, what to eat and drink, and what to do in this south of the border city…
Where to Stay
- Leafy, sunlit streets and colonial architecture make Roma the perfect home base. Airbnb has some great options, including the top floor of an art gallery and Mexico City’s first Bauhaus-type building.

- The instagram-perfect Hotel Condesa DF is a must if you’re looking for a great hotel.

Where to Eat & Drink
- La Fonda Margarita for breakfast. A hop, skip and an Uber ride away from Roma but worth it. Anthony Bourdain said this place was great, and he wasn’t wrong. Giant bubbling pots simmer over charcoal stoves, the atmosphere is raucous, and the coffee is served sweet and black. We ate everything on the menu. Don’t miss the chicharrón.

- Rosetta Panaderia. This cute neighborhood spot serving delicious pastries and coffee is the perfect place to sit and plan your daily adventures.

- El Partnita. Try this antojería (translation: place for little cravings) for delicious tacos. We were hooked on the jicama stalks and hot sauce.

- Cirene. Hands down the best seafood tacos and ceviche. Don’t miss their locally brewed craft Colimita, which also happens to come in the most beautiful packaging.

- Street tacos on the corner of Colima & Orizaba. The goat tacos served at this unnamed taco stand are delicious, trust me. Make sure you order the broth, and don’t miss the hot salsas.

- Hotel Condesa DF. Head to the rooftop bar of Hotel Condesa for sunset drinks.

- La Clandestina. A cozy mescal bar in Roma Norte, specializing in mescals from Oaxaca.

What to Do
- Casa Luis Barrangan. Visit the colorful former house and studio of modernist Mexican architect Luis Barragán.

- Stock up on textiles and pottery at La Ciudadela markets.
- Visit Museo Soumaya, an amazing structure designed by Mexican architect Fernando Romero.

- Fonart, the National Fund for the Development of Artisans, offers a great selection of quality textiles, huipiles, pottery and various handicrafts, sourced from artisans all over Mexico.

- Don’t miss the beautiful and inspiring Frida Kahlo Museum, also known as the Blue House or Casa Azul. Tip: buy your tickets online and skip the queue!
