Ukrainian Camilla Ewald (Evashchuk) became the second mother of the famous boxer, the youngest world champion Mike Tyson. She was by his side in the most difficult times of his life, always protected and supported him.
What is known about Camilla Ewald?
Camilla was the daughter of emigrants from Galicia region (West of Ukraine) - Hnat and Nastia Evaschuk (later the family changed their surname to Ewald). Camilla was 7 years old when her family come to USA. The family lived in the town of Catskill, 160 kilometers from New York. Later, after the Second World War, Camilla met a well-known coach in New York - the Italian Cas D'Amato, who turned ordinary guys from the street into professional boxers.
How did Camilla Ewald become Mike Tyson's second mother?
One day, a 13-year-old boy who studied at a school for juvenile delinquents and often spent time in the cell for fights was brought to coach Cas D'Amato. It was Mike Tyson. He was put in a sparring match and after three rounds Cas stopped the fight. "If you listen to me, I'll make you the youngest heavyweight champion," he told Mike. And Camille said in the evening - " All my life I've been waiting for this guy" If Cas drilled the boys in the gym, Camilla kept discipline at home. Duties were assigned to each. For example, Mike took out the trash. He wasn`t used to such a regime, so in the first year he ran away from home three times. When he turned 15, Cas and Camila decided to adopt him. Mike's father left the family a long time ago, and his mother didn't care much about her son, so she didn't mind.
Camila taught teenagers table manners, showed them how to cook food, wash things, sometimes even taught them to read and write. Camilla surrounded the boys with love and care - she baked cakes for them, listened to their worries, and helped Mike make cages for pigeons, because the boy spent all his free time with birds. When Mike's biological mother died, the boy asked if Camilla would now be his mother and if he could call her «Mother» . She replied "Yes Mike!". And** from that time she became his mother.**
Cass didn`t t saw his adopted son lift the world championship belt over his head at the age of 20, being the youngest ever to hold the title. Camilla went through the most difficult times for a boxer with him - divorce, a lawsuit regarding rape, imprisonment, attribution of a manic-depressive state. "You treat him as if he is a machine, and not a person with a soul," she replied to the harassment of the press.
No matter what he had to go through, his room was always waiting for Mike in her house. He often came just in the middle of the night to talk or be in a place where he was truly loved. «I am very lucky that she has blessed me with her love and concern for me most of my life. I will miss her terribly»- said an emotional Mike when Camilla Ewald died.

Згодом, після Другої світової війни Камілла познайомилася зі знаним тренером у Нью-Йорку – італійцем Касом Д'Амато, який зі звичайних хлопців з вулиці робив професійних боксерів.
Коли Кас переїхав до Камілли, він відкрив на горищі поліцейського відділку тренажерний зал, а найздібніших учнів поселяв просто в її домі. Як Камілла Евалд стала другою мамою Майка Тайсона? Одного дня до тренера Каса Д'Амато привели 13-річного хлопця, який навчався у школі для неповнолітніх злочинців і за бійки часто відсиджувався у карцері. Це був Майк Тайсон. Його поставили у спаринг і після трьох раундів Кас зупинив бій. "Якщо будеш мене слухатись, зроблю тебе наймолодшим чемпіоном у суперважкій категорії", – сказав він Майку. А Каміллі ввечері повідомив – "На цього хлопця я чекав усе життя".
Якщо Кас муштрував хлопців у залі, то Камілла тримала дисципліну вдома. За кожним були закріплені обов’язки. Наприклад, Майк виносив сміття. До такого режиму не звик, тож за перший рік тричі тікав із дому. Коли йому виповнилося 15 років, Кас та Каміла вирішили всиновити його. Батько Майка давно покинув сім’ю, а мама не дуже переймалася сином, тож була не проти.
Каміла навчала підлітків манерам за столом, показувала, як готувати їсти, прати речі, іноді навіть вчила писати й читати. Камілла огортала хлопців любов’ю і турботою – пекла для тих торти, вислуховувала їхні переживання, а Майку допомогла змайструвати клітки для голубів, адже хлопець весь вільний час проводив із птахами. Коли рідна мама Майка померла, хлопчина запитав, чи тепер Камілла буде його мамою і чи може він її так називати. Вона відповіла "Так, Майку". І з того часу стала його мамою.
Кас не дожив рік, аби побачити, як його прийомний син у 20 років підносить над головою пояс чемпіона світу, будучи наймолодшим у цьому статусі за всю історію. Камілла пройшла з ним найважчі для боксера часи – розлучення, судовий позов щодо зґвалтування, ув’язнення, приписування маніакально-депресивного стану. "Ви ставитесь до нього так, наче він машина, а не людина з душею", – відповідала вона на цькування преси.
Щоб не довелося пережити, у її домі на Майка завжди чекала його кімната. Він часто приїздив просто посеред ночі, щоб поговорити або побути в місці, де його по-справжньому люблять. "Мені дуже пощастило, що вона благословила мене своєю любов’ю і турбувалась про мене більшу частину мого життя. Я страшенно сумуватиму за нею," – сказав розчулений Майк, коли Камілла Евалд померла.
