How to make millions: tips for older rich

You can spend two years and $100,000 on an MBA at Harvard. Or a few minutes in conversation with intelligent wealthy old men who share their experiences. Our correspondent did just that, taking advantage of the slackness of those guys during the circumnavigation cruise. Listen to their advice. Don't you need a million dollars?

you solemnly saunter along the coast of Brazil on a cruise ship Crystal Serenity, one of the most luxurious in the world. It's time the slush on the streets and seasonal affective disorder to the North of these places. But here, on the deck with a swimming pool, passengers bask in the sun, sipping a "Caipirinha". The cost of cabins in our three-month cruise around the world — from $40 000 for a tiny room on the third deck up to half a million for a luxury penthouse. Well, it is clear that most of the men on Board — pensioners, and, of course, rich and successful. A sort of gorilla compared to us, monkeys.

At the time of their youth it was possible to get an MBA (Master of business administration, education course for heads of middle and senior managers in business — MH), the first such training entered Harvard in 1908. But only a few of the local millionaires have a degree. In fact, some of them not even finished high school. But they have their work and biography have earned much more than an honorary degree, which we call MH the MBR, or "Master of real business".

"The main problem of business schools is that most of the really successful people never attended, said Philip, Delves-Broughton, author of the memoir "Anticipating schedule: two years at Harvard business school." — This situation is impossible in medicine, for example, or in law. Any successful lawyer has a law degree. But not every successful businessman has an MBA". So let's save dry textbooks full of tables and formulas in order to listen to those who actually earned a lot of money.

Rolf Illsley

After serving in the army during world war II, Illsley founded a company for the development and production of antireflection coatings for different kinds of optical lenses. Today, Optical Coating Laboratory technology is used in the manufacture of satellites, computer monitors and flat TVs.

1. Make a list: not what you want to do, and who you want to be.

How to do "In 1960 when I was 38 years old, I was offered $1 million for my company recalls Illsley. — At that time it was a lot of money, so I started thinking to myself. I decided to compile a list of what for me was really important: 1) when I'm 80, I want to feel that I lived a life; 2) I want to be sane, not to lose self-respect and dignity, not to be alone; 3) be in good health; 4) to experience the excitement, what do you do; 5) to have the freedom and peace of mind; 6) not to think that someone (or fate itself) mean to me; 7) to have enough money for all of the above; 8) be free from frustration; 9) be confident but not proud; 10) do not buy too many properties that must be maintained; 11) to make decisions and plan your time. So money is not an end in itself. I refused the offer, and today, when I'm 91 years old I can proudly say that I achieved everything that was in that list."

Why it works "what actually is a good job? It gives you a feeling of well spent time, values and self-esteem, says Warren Bennis, Professor of management at the University of southern California. — To prepare the list — excellent idea, but in today's rapidly changing world, you may have a couple of times a year to make changes to it".
