Monkey Pox Virus Outbreak in Nigeria

According to the World Health Organisation (W.H.O), Monkey Pox virus is a rare disease that occurs primarily in remote parts of Central and West Africa, near tropical rain forests. The monkey Pox virus can cause a fatal illness in humans and, although it is similar to human smallpox which has been eradicated, it is much milder.

1: Do you know what Monkey Pox is?

Monkey pox is a viral disease caused by monkey pox virus. It is mostly found in rodents, non-human primates. It was first discovered in humans in 1970 in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

  1. Do you know how monkey pox is contracted and transmitted?

It is contracted through body contact with any infected material, animal or person and transmitted through broken parts of skin (even if not visible), respiratory tract or the eyes, nose or mouth

  1. Is Monkey pox preventable?

Yes, by washing hands with soap and water or using alcohol based hand sanitizer regularly, especially after contact with infected animals or humans. Avoid contact with animals that harbor the virus (including animals that are sick or that have been found dead in areas where monkey pox occurs). Avoid contact with any materials such as beddings that have been in contact with sick animal or human.

  1. Do you know what to do if you or your family/friend suspect contracting monkey pox?

Please go to the nearest Health Centre. Infected persons should be isolated. Wear personal protection equipment like hand gloves when attending to them and take them immediately to the nearest health centre.
