Beartooth "Aggressive" Music Video

This was my fourth time directing a video for the band Beartooth, and this time they wanted something different. The song was really made out of frustration of the current political climate and they wanted to show that. There are million different opinions out there politically, so I set about to show frustration manifesting in a lost youth and what that could lead to. That was one of the main reason for the POV reveal at the end, someone lost and dangerous can perceive themselves in the right.

I chose the black and white aesthetic to reinforce the feeling of the grit of being in a depressed area, feeling bleak, and the symbolism of black and white as polar opposite ideology. We shot just outside of Pittsburgh and the location turned out perfect.

The creative called for POV shots of an “aggressive youth” which is revealed at the end of the video as well as a night exterior performance, shot on the Sony FS7. The POV was all captured on a GoPro head rig. The Cinematographer John Pope made look of the video with a custom B/W LUT in DaVinci Resolve, which was also viewed on set to help to keep the contrast and look consistent.

Overall, this is probably my favorite video I made in 2016. There were some challenges with the head rig (and the lead actor actually busted the back window of the Cadillac on a practice take...) but it was still a great shoot with a very talented crew and a band that always is a pleasure to work with.
