DONT TALK TOO MUCH.

Most counsellors have difficulties with holding advice and solutions. It seems strange to tell a counsellor not to counsel but this is vital to the counseling process. The counsellor will be tempted to pick up something the client says and go into a long, wordy, perhaps biblical explanation filled with religious jargon and nice sounding solutions.

There is a time for the counsellor to give advice, but only after he has worked with the client through a session or several sessions, and only after he is sure everything has come to the surface. It is helpful for the counsellor to restate some of the client's problems or to lead him in one direction and away from what appears to be a detour.

The client may come to a brick wall; he may be at the core of his problem and have difficulty getting everything out. The counsellor can help the client clarify, modify or redefine certain things to aid in his "coming out" process.

Don't cut the client off. An example of talking too much, too soon, is to say to him, "Oh, I know just what your problem is. What you need to do is ........" The untrained Christian counsellor may brush off the person with, "All you need to do is getting right with God." That may be true, but the person may never say his need for getting right with God until and unless he sees what his problem is, and why he needs to get right with God.
