Having Singularity Of Purpose

in #motivational3 years ago

One of the reasons why many people's dream has not been fulfilled is because of lack of focus. Hopping from one dream to another will make you not to be able to fulfil any of them. You will agree with me that no tree ever has a future if it is transplanted every now and then. For it to grow and bear fruits, then it has to remain planted. In the same way in life, for success to be achieved, one has to be committed to their dream with singleness of mind and singularity of purpose.

During my internship program some years back when I finished from school, we were asked to choose a branch of our course to focus on for the internship. A friend of mine decided to combine as many as he could but at the end of the day, he ended up not mastering any of them. He had a vague knowledge of all but mastered none and it affected his performance negatively. This is why when you create a dream and a goal to achieve, you should focus on it maximally with a focused approach to see it fulfilled before you create other dreams. Having to pursue after multiple goals at onces may not only limit your speed but reduce your productivity.

In a football field for example, there is a reason why each of the players have their wings and their areas of specialty. If the goalkeeper decides to combine both his duties as a goalkeeper with the duties of an attacker, he will end up not being able to perform maximally in both capacities. He will concede goals and will not score any. But if he maintains the goalpost, it will be easier to function well. More often than not, when you have multiple targets to pursue at once, there is a high proclivity that you may end up missing both of them. Focusing on one goal per time increases you chances of succeeding at it than trying to become a "Jack of all trade."

When I was much younger, during our long vacation from school at the end of the session, we normally travelled to the village to spend some time and get acquainted with communal life. During our stay in the village, we normally engaged in many activities but the one that still strikes my memory is one of the bush hunting expedition we undertook. When we set out for the expedition, we were prepared to hunt bush rat which we were meant to use for suya (peppered grilled meat delicacy). We were paired in groups and then led by a group leader.

The bush rats normally lives inside a narrow underground tunnel which they often built themselves with two entrance/exit at both ends. So to catch the bush rat, one of the entrances will be blocked with fire, so it will force the rats to run out from the other entrance. However, the way they run out massively would confused the people waiting at the other entrance. So what the group leader normally told us as kids then was not to mind the way the rats would come out, and that each of us should just concentrate on chasing just one rat per time. After the hunting exercise and as we were going home with some rats, I asked the group leader why he advised us to chase one rat per time. He looked at me and replied calmly with a smile; "it will be easier to catch the rat if you focus on one per time. However, if you decide to chase more than one rat at a time, you will end up not catching anyone."

These words made so much meaning to me that I even looked beyond the rat hunting and appropriated it to other aspects of the human life. When you are focused on doing something without being distracted by other things, your productivity tends to increase and your chances of getting that thing done become amplified. There is a speed and accuracy that one experiences when he does what his is focused on. In academics for example, when studying and one jumps in-between notes in a single reading without concentrating on anyone, the student will end up not understanding anything. It will be better to focus on one topic and when that one is understood, then he can go into another topic.

Being focused on one's goals gives one a boost and an edge to pursue after it. This reminds me of what one of my mentors would normally say; "when your eyes are single, your goals will become easy." This simply means that when you become focused on what you want to achieve without allowing what someone does or not to distract you, it will be easy for you to achieve it. So remain focused in life and see how easy it is to achieve your dreams.
