A Geeky Dad's Movie Guide to Avengers: Infinity War (2018)

in #movie-review6 years ago

Considering that Avengers: Infinity War is one of the longest super hero movies I have seen in quite some time, it seems strange that I could make this the shortest review I have ever written.

Here it is:

The creators of Avengers: Infinity War did everything perfectly.

Thanks for stopping by.

Make sure you tip your servers.

Good night!

You aren't getting off that easy.

The creators of Avengers: Infinity War did everything perfectly... given the unavoidable limitations.

Before dealing with the limitations, let's start with what they got right.

First of all, it is important to note that I saw this in 2D at a Dolby Cinema. This is by far my favorite way to watch a movie (even better than Real IMAX). The picture is perfect and the sound rattles the remarkably comfortable seats. If you have access to one, Avengers:Infinity War is perfect for it!

The Story

Sorry Star Lord, you are dead wrong. This story rocks!

This should be a no brainer. Every movie should have a great story. And yet, it is far too rare. Too many movies rely so heavily on special effects that they forget to tell a story. Infinity War does not have that problem. What is truly unique about this story is that it is simple enough for an eleven year old to understand (my daughter asked almost no questions during the entire movie) yet it has a layer of complexity that can cause more mature viewers to delve deeper into more philosophical dilemmas.

The most impressive part of the story is that it ties several different stories together very well. It is as if there were 6 different 20 minute long television programs all tied together perfectly. That is incredibly hard to do. There were very few instances when I found myself thinking, "Why is this group off doing this while the other group is doing that?" If that did occur, the writers nearly immediately explained the plausible reason for it.

Not only did this film tie together the stories within it, the writers also managed to tie every previous movie together. Why is Thor with the Guardians of the Galaxy? Why is Spider-Man with Dr. Strange? Why would Black Panther be involved? The writers came up with plausible reasons for all of the team-ups. As the movie progresses, more and more of the heroes come together. Miraculously it all makes sense!

The Action

Wow!

The action sequences were amazing and numerous. Marvel has figured out the formula. They include an incredible action sequence as soon as possible and then make sure that they never totally lose that momentum. This movie is over two and a half hours long. I have a hard time sitting still that long. To be honest, I usually need to hit the bathroom at least once during a movie that long. But during this movie, I never dreamed of leaving my seat. I knew I would miss too much.

As I sit here trying to count how many action sequences there were... I can't. There were too many to count. I don't think a single one of them was unnecessary. Not only did they entertain, they helped drive the story. None gave the impression that the writers had set a timer and said, "It's been 15 minutes, we better blow something up or we will bore the audience." The action scenes seemed to fit in naturally.

Marvel also knows how to produce nearly perfect special effects. I realize many people are sick of CGI, but without it, there could never be a Thanos, Hulk or even Iron Man. In addition to the characters, space ships and battles, the world building was amazing. This movie takes place on several planets. Each one of them is incredible. The attention to detail on these worlds was truly impressive.

Humor

There are so many great one liners in this movie.

The story is incredibly dark, and yet there are a ton of laughs. The writers somehow made the jokes started in Guardians of the Galaxy and Thor: Ragnarok work along side the seriousness of Black Panther and Captain America. It was a perfect balance. Whenever there wasn't an important plot revelation or action scene, there was an appropriately placed joke. Again, none of these seemed forced. Perhaps there were times when the heroes were in so much danger that you would not believe someone would crack a joke... but these are veteran warriors who have seen it all. Humor relieves tension. Making light of a desperate situation makes you seem invincible. Therefore, I felt even these worked.

Emotion

I'm getting chills thinking about some of the scenes in this movie.

I pride myself on always avoiding spoilers. Therefore, I will keep this section as short as possible. Four of my high school students told me that they cried during this movie. Because they all have such rich history developed in their previous movies, the audience cares about every single character.

Over the past three years, there have been two movies scenes that have unexpectedly stirred my emotions. I am used to crying in movies. For example I let some tears fly in both at Logan and Hacksaw Ridge. However, both of those movies are intended to pull at your heart strings. But there are two that even as I write this, still choke me up. One occurs in Star Wars: The Force Awakens when Rey says "The garbage will do" and they pan to the Millennium Falcon. The other is when Captain America makes his first appearance in Avengers: Infinity War. I honestly cannot explain why I got (and currently am) teary eyed. The director and cinematographer clearly used some voodoo on me that I can't resist. When I see it again this week, I will pay special attention to why the scene moved me so much.

The Villain

Thanos is by far the most powerful villain I have ever seen.

From the moment you see Thanos on screen, two things are crystal clear: he is ridiculously powerful and evil. In fact, I believe he is the most power and terrifying villain I have ever seen. One of the problems I had with Black Panther was that the villain had a point. Although his methods were extreme, his motivations made sense. On a deep level, Thanos' motivations also make sense... but his methods are so evil, crazy and extreme that there is no mistake that he must be stopped. He is a true zealot. There are few things more horrifying than a misguided zealot... except one that has the ultimate power in the universe.

The limitations

One problem is that this scene is not even in the movie.

First of all, this is only one half of a story. As much effort as the writers put into this seeming like a stand alone movie, it is not. Although it does find a natural break on which to pause, everyone knows there is a huge second act to come.

Some of my friends have compared this to Empire Strikes Back. That is a fair comparison. There was definitely no mistaking the final scene of ESB as being the final scene. However, I find this more similar to Kill Bill: Vol. 1. Avengers: Infinity War didn't merely set up a sequel, it is flat out only half a movie. As a result, I found it difficult to get too emotional about anything that happened. Instead of me walking away thinking "I can't believe that happened", I found myself wondering "How will they undo that in the next movie?" I need to reserve my emotions for the real end to the story. It is very clear that anything that happened is not necessarily permanent. But that is ok. It looked so cool happening that it doesn't even matter.

The second problem is that too many characters did not get enough screen time. For me to be satisfied with the amount of screen time dedicated to Groot, Hulk, Drax, Black Widow, ... actually everyone, the movie would need to be over 4 hours long. Given the limitation, the writers did the best they could. In addition, I know it is only half over. Perhaps I will be satisfied after both halves have been assembled.

The biggest limitation is that we have to wait one year before we can see the conclusion of this amazing story.

Final notes

Although I don't want to ruin anything, there is an incredibly surprising cameo in the movie. In addition, the after the credit scene is very important.

It is of course interesting friend Han, that the most evil of villains, considers his quest good and noble. Fortunately for us we are mice and all mice are good!

Iron Man, Thor, the Hulk and the rest of the Avengers unite to battle their most powerful enemy yet -- the evil Thanos. On a mission to collect all six Infinity Stones, Thanos plans to use the artifacts to inflict his twisted will on reality. The fate of the planet and existence itself has never been more uncertain as everything the Avengers have fought for has led up to this moment. It's an interesting movie to watch@Han, stiffnscurry

Well there is this one.

I haven't seen the movie yet so I was hesitant on reading this, whatever-the-word-is-for-phobia-of-spoilers is real. 100 points to Gryffindor for not making me scream at myself for reading this.

Also your rating method at the end there is possibly the best thing I've ever seen; if all movies were presented that way I might be able to watch one with my father here and there XD

I can't stand spoilers so I try incredibly hard not to include them.

Fantastic Harry Potter reference! My wife and kids are Harry Potter fanatics (I love the books too but I am a muggle compared to them).

I'm glad you like the ratings. My goal is to write how I would explain it to a friend.

I really appreciate and respect how you can give such an AWESOME movie review WITHOUT giving spoilers!
Extraordinary!

You really need to write more. Your stream of consciousness parenting stuff is a really fun read. If you do. Please let me know so I don't miss it.

Oh I just saw this! I'm so bad at keeping up, I'll get the hang of it (I think) XD... Thank you I really appreciate that.

That's my goal in writing as well, to be the same amount of me as I am on my best friends porch. Feel free to invite your wife and children for a Steemit HP trivia game with me any time! No Google allowed ;) That would be a fun idea wouldn't it? Steemit trivia games. I would totally do that if I had any... Anything on here lol

Oh my daughter put a potato bug on my bed just in time to stop me from rambling... o.o

wow another really great review

I have seen the all avengers series. But Avengers: Infinity War is some special. I'm really impressed to read your awesome review. I hope the movie is 2018 biggest blockbuster as already grossed above 800 million usd.

This is one of the best action and science fiction movie thanks @hanshotfirst for sharing you review about Avengers Infinity War in this movie Hulk & Iron man are both my favourite characters but still I have not saw Avenger Infinity War but After observing your review I will must see .

I hope you enjoy it!

Number of times I plan to see this movie in the theater: At least 3 times.

then i will watch atleast 5 times
man you made me excited

It was indeed a SUPERB movie, @hanshotfirst! It's true that the movie sequences are easily understandable and each of them tell a story, which will definitely knock you off your seat.

There are times I thought I can already calm down, but once you start to calm down something's gonna happen. Lol. I guess it's not only "Infinity War", but "Infinity Getting Money Off Your Pocket" because it's never ending, but of course, I AIN'T COMPLAININ'! Marvel, take my money!

First off, it was terrible, heartbreaking, awful, saddening, amazing, and possibly the best Marvel movie to date.

Actually, scratch that - the best Marvel movie to date, no question, it's a done deal. It didn't only live up to the hype; it exceeded it.
Thor's powers. Can we talk about Stormbreaker, and him kicking the Outriders asses? Like, wow! He won that fight. He won that fight for everyone.

Loki and Heimdall's deaths were in the first five minutes of the film. Unexpected for me. I'd heard rumors about Loki's death, and since he's died a few times in the past, I didn't expect his death to be so absolute. It was very, very sad, though I feel it was necessary.

I felt bad for Thanos. There, I said it. He really did love Gamora, despite his insanity and his evil agenda. He genuinely believed that what he was doing was right. Thanos had a motive. He was a sympathetic character. He became my favorite villain, instantly. Thanos killed everyone, mercilessly and relentlessly. But I somehow felt sorry for him. Not many characters can do that, but the Russos executed that aspect perfectly and seamlessly. Incredible and terrifying.
10/10. Definitely the best Marvel film to date. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and it made me happy, sad, itt made me laugh, and want to scream. Not many movies can do that, and spark that much emotion into the audience. It took you through every emotion in the book.

They wrote Thanos very well. I could almost sympathize with him. But his idea was just so crazy that I couldn't. And that is a perfect villain!

Bringing together all the heroes in and shoot did great, with the way you analyse or summarize is so thrilling I can't wait to see the movie..., cinema here I come. Thanks for sharing.

I saw it at an IMAX and it was visual overload. I probably need to see it again to catch a few things. It is very good and they pulled lots of plots together well. Some characters don't have much to do apart from fight. We've got a couple more movies before part 2. They have to set up a major character first. My son and I have watched most of the series together and booked over them. They have been a major part of his life, like Harry Potter was for my daughter. I guess my equivalent was the original Star Wars trilogy

That is awesome that you are sharing this with your son!

I have been blessed that both of my children love Star Wars, Harry Potter and Marvel.

I thought this was just another special effect movie, but you said in the beginning that the story is good, so I was relieved :D And it really got me to read the post, and I must say it's amazing!

It seems really like an amazing movie, full of action that brings those effects, and the story behind it fits perfectly. I might be going to look this one. I'm not that into superheroes movies because they are concentrated on effects, and the story turns out to be a bad one. So, I'm gonna trust you on this one :D

Have a great day!

I don't think you will be disappointed.

I just watched it...Your review is really complex and very proffessional. I would love the film finished differently. Thanos is Mighty guy, it is not easy to fight him as well as our minds are...

You will have to wait until May 2019 to see the real end. I'm curious what will stick and what will change.

Arrrggghh thanks for the spoiler, comoooon' how would HULK not have his own screen time, hes allll the energy!

Although I don't want to ruin anything, there is an incredibly surprising cameo in the movie. In addition, the after the credit scene is very important.

Now this after the cameo is begining to become a thing at these movies. You just gotta watch every single dot on the screen

Thanks for the share

Hulk has some... just not enough.

Ah seeing is believing, i have to get my own ticket, thanks man

Geeky Dad's Movie Guide

My most important guide is you didn’t fall asleep. There was one movie I went to where I literally felt asleep. For you shortest review ever I have to say it was not that short at all 😆. For some reason after reading your review, I became fan of Thanos. But that’s just me, perhaps I will change my mind after I actually see it. As you mentioned this superhero series are just too long, some idol change could be for a good. I actualy watched few movies with multiple stories being tight up together and in the last minute they all had something (the main thing) in common. I always loved these kind of movies. I’m really anxious to see Avengers: Infinity War after your review.

Well the fact that a story lead to all the heroes lives and their coming together made it quite amazing, I do not like black panther because I think the hype became too much and I expected so much more, but I really wasn't thrilled this one really lived up to expectation, and if a movie can tell a brilliant story with all the added actions then it's got a pass mark for me

I too did not believe Black Panther was as good as everyone said. Still good though.

I just saw it last night!! It did not disappoint :)

Oh man I just watched it a couple of days ago in 3D and I there are some movies that just wanted to cash in on the craze but for me it worked in Infinity War.

The action just popped out and made things aliv e as if you were in front of them and about to be clobbered by Thanos.

I agree with your assessment on Thanos being a zealot who wanted a specific thing. Although for me he makes sense and rational. He wasn't some deranged lunatic nor one dimensional.

I have to hand it to their effects and design team who made the Mad Titan menacing and intimidating and it wasn't because he was big and manhandled everyone but his character design just worked. To put it into context the other purple menacing presence was Apocalypse but we all know he was hardly threatening in appearance or Aura.

Damn MCU really knows it's stuff as it made us laugh with the quips from Starlord, the sarcasm of Tony, the innocence of Peter Parker, and the swag of Thor, man hulk was hilarious with the jokes.

It made us stay in our seats and watch each action unfold and it gave us such a rollercoaster ride of emotions.

It was a great movie and for a comic nerd who read infinity gauntlet and infinity war damn MCU why make us wait another year?!!!

Thanos definitely has a point. But with unlimited power, why not solve the problem in a positive way?

This is the first time that I have ever been g]hesitant about reading your post. I mean, how dare you post a review of the movie three days before I am going to take the fam-jam to see it. I felt like I was reading through with one eye closed. Peaking at the words just in case there was a spoiler and I have to shut my eyes quickly. Not sure why I was concerned because as always you gave an epic review without so much as ruining anything for me. To be honest, I am even more excited to see the movie now than I was yesterday. It has bee a long week of putting my fingers in my ears and humming loudly as my students have blabbered on about this movie. I suppose one might say it is my fault for waiting until the second weekend to go see it but time didn't permit it to happen last week.

I always very careful never to include spoilers. My next post might be all about how much I hate spoilers. I really think you will like this one quite a bit.

Enjoy!

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. And even though there is another one coming which may handle many of the things in this one, it still has an impact.

Well @hanshotfirst I went to watch the movie first day. And I really loved it. I was waiting for this movie since a long time. I am a big fan of marvel cinematic universe.
I loved the story plot the way they have made it, I would love to see what is going to happen next when we are left with only few avengers.

I loved the scene when thor came to wakanda with his new weapon. The movie was upto the expectations.
Thanks a lot for sharing your reviews.
I really appreciate your efforts and time.

I agree. There were a ton of great action scenes.

seems to be the best option so far! reading your impressions makes me feel part of the film and I still haven't seen it, but in case I get some sbd for this, I hope you'll be a good critic, happy night, maybe I'll come back to you, to give you my impressions.

The movie was really amazing and I loved it. I would say it is the best edition and I loved the action scenes.
Loke when thor comes in and the Iron man fight.

I also love the story line up. It is somewhat perfect and I really like it. I have been watching marvel movies since a long time.
Thanks for sharing your post.

I really need to watch this! 😭

I see this movie trailer I hope it is a good movie thanks dear for sharing

We wait almost 10 minutes for the credit scene. We can say that we have a piece of the next story until 2019.

tôi rất hứng thú với bộ phim này
tôi nghĩ tôi sẽ xem lại nó.
cảm ơn bạn

seems to be the best option so far! reading your impressions makes me feel part of the film and I still haven't seen it, but in case I get some sbd for this, I hope you'll be a good critic, happy night, maybe I'll come back to you, to give you my impressions.

The story look really interesting, i like this kind of movies , i hope to find some time to watch it.

I have seen the all avengers series, i like my movie

Thanks for sharing ,hope to search for it and watch hereafter.

ah, right, almost forgot about this one...thanks for reminding me :-)
I'll have to definitely watch it asap!

Nice info for us daddy. I managed to watch the movie with my son and wife. If only there is a great ending to it as still need to wait for the next movie to expect a happy ending! Not planning to mention much about the ending or content as I don't want to be a spoiler too! lolx

I'm not a very ardent MCU fan but I didn't miss the premiere of the movie. I felt Thor was amazing. I'm now a huge fan of Thor. I still don't understand why the hulk refused to show up

The story is incredibly dark, and yet there are a ton of laughs.
I think this is why I really like this movie. The movie should pass for a tragedy but the producers made sure that there was enough comic to make people laugh during the movie.

I think a lot of people left the Cinema with mixed fillings of hope, sadness, suspense and satisfaction

spoiler warning

I think the Hulk refused to show up because he was afraid of getting trashed by Thanos (as he was at the beginning of the film). That goes to show how great and powerful of a villain Thanos is!

It's an awesome movie, the effects, the humor, I love Tony Stark, many of us want the saga to never end. Good article about this movie @hanshotfirst, God bless you.

Regards...
