Mystery Movie Quote Review: The Equalizer (2014)

A few days ago, I posted a Mystery Movie Quote:

The movie quote comes from The Equalizer (2014).

An upcoming The Equalizer II (2018) is coming to theatres on July 20, 2018.

THE EQUALIZER - REVIEW / SUMMARY

I enjoyed The Equalizer very much for the story, the drama, the action and the various connections throughout the movie.

The movie surrounds Robert McCall, who appears as a regular guy at a regular job. However, Robert has hidden skills and talents. He is actually a former agent familiar with tactical skills, intelligence, counter-intelligence. He can fight physically and tactically.

At his deli/diner he befriends Alina, who is a young girl, forced into a life of upscale prostitution. After Alina rebels against a customer, Slavi beats her half to death. Robert attempts to buy her freedom. He realizes that the only solution with these characters is to remove them from her life, by killing them. These characters are the hub of a major crime organization, which sends Teddy to clean up the mess. The movie progresses with Robert and Teddy playing a bit of "Cat and Mouse", but it is unclear who is the Cat and who is the Mouse. In the end, Robert kills Teddy and he further goes to kill the leader of the organization, taking "the head of the snake."

There were many interesting quotes and connections.

THE QUOTES: "... do something about it because you can."

In the movie, Robert is asked why he helped the girl. Robert states:

  • "One day somebody
    does something unspeakable
    to someone else to...
    someone you hardly knew,
    and you...
do something about it because you can."

This is the most significant statement in the movie. He does it because he can. He has the ability to have a positive effect on the world. I would like people to do this also. Step up and do what you can. Everybody has talents. Everybody has time.
If you have time and talents, then use those talents to improve our world.

THE QUOTES: " I'm sorry. "

In the movie, Robert enters the office of Slavi. He offers $9800 for the freedom of Alina. His offer is refused. He turns to leave, but then locks the door and turns to face five attackers. He systematically defends himself and methodically attacks the five men, killing them all. He sits to have a final word with Slavi, telling Slavi that Alina'a life will go on.
As Slavi dies, Robert says " I'm sorry. " It is not until later in the movie that we understand that he is talking to his wife, because he promised his wife that he " would never go back to being that person."

Robert said, " I'm sorry " to his wife, who has died, because he broke his promise.
Here's the quote that tells us about the promise and that he said, "I'm sorry" to his wife.

  • "I've done some bad things
    in my life, Nicolai.
    Things I'm not proud of.
    I promised someone
    that I love very much
that I would never go back
    to being that person.
    But for you...
    I'm gonna make an exception.
    "

THE BOOKS: Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway

In the movie, Robert states

  • "Depends upon how you look at it.
The old man met his adversary when
he thought that part of his life was over.
He saw himself in the fish.
    Came to...
Came to respect it the more it fought."

This also describes Robert's own life and sees his own adversary, when he thought that part of his life was over.

THE BOOKS: Don Quixote by Cervantes

In the movie, Robert states

  • "Oh, it's about a guy who thinks
he's a knight in shining armor.
The only thing is, he lives in a world
    where knights don't exist anymore."

This also describes the path that Robert is about to embark upon. He intends to be a Knight to protect those that need protection.

THE BOOKS: Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison

In the movie, Robert is sitting in the deli/diner with his current book: Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison. He is being anonymous in his outreach to those who need help.

I so empathize with Alina's character, definitely in a No Way Out situation! Try to back away only to get the tar beat out of you. Ladies, be very careful with certain slick talking guys, a huge red flag when he wants you to take drugs! "It's harmless baby."

The Equalizer would have been nicer if it was a little shorter and much consistent, but I could guarantee that it still entertains, it does have the appeal through its action and acting. Though, there are more serious things that could have made it a lot compelling thriller. The film does have the knack of embracing either of its elements, but it just keeps shifting back and forth, like we're not getting to the actual big picture.

Can you clarify what "more serious things that could have made it a lot compelling thriller" ?

What do you mean by "embracing either of its elements" ? What elements?
