When the Wind Blows is a 1986 film, directed by Jimmy Murakami, based on the graphic novel by Raymond Briggs, which tells the story of Jim and Hilda Bloggs, a retired English couple living in a remote rural area of Great Britain, in a modest, beautiful house, living your day to day with great tranquility. However, an announcement on the radio hints at the possibility of nuclear war breaking out. These are the years of the cold war and that latent conflict between the US and the USSR threatened to bring devastating repercussions for the whole world, given the antecedents of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, so despite being in Europe, the tranquility of the Bloggs can terminate at any time.

But despite that, the Bloggs do not despair; Deeply patriotic, they have absolute confidence in their government and Jim has been briefed on everything to do in case conflict breaks out: build a shelter inside the house, stockpile food and water for a couple of weeks, paint the windows white, etc., so he sets about building the shelter and follows the instructions in the government brochures.

One of the things I liked the most about this film is the contrast between the dangerous threat of the nuclear bomb and the naturalness with which the couple continues with their routine, eating at the same time as always, talking during meals, making their domestic chores and nostalgically evoking the times of the World War II, the leaders of that time and ensuring that if they survived that war, they will also survive this one. All in all, the elderly couple is charming, engaging, and funny in their own way. So much so that for a moment we believe that everything is a satire and that the supposed bomb will never explode, but then the announced, the unthinkable, the tragedy happens: an atomic bomb falls on England.
Una de las cosas que más me gustó de esta película es ese contraste entre la peligrosa amenaza de la bomba nuclear y la naturalidad con la que el matrimonio sigue con su rutina, comiendo a la misma hora de siempre, conversando durante las comidas, realizando sus tareas domésticas y evocando con nostalgia los tiempos de la segunda guerra mundial, los líderes de aquel momento y asegurando que si sobrevivieron a esa guerra, sobrevivirán también a esta. Dentro de todo, la pareja de ancianos resulta encantadora, cautivadora y divertida a su manera. Tanto que por un instante creemos que todo es una sátira y que la supuesta bomba nunca estallará, pero entonces ocurre lo anunciado, lo impensado, la tragedia: una bomba atómica cae sobre Inglaterra.
What happens thereafter is a pretty sad story. I don't want to give many details because I have already told enough about the film, but it reminded me of that other animated film of the time, The grave of the fireflies, not only because of the similarity of certain elements (an atomic bomb in the middle of a war) but for the fate suffered by the innocent, people who have nothing to do directly with the struggles between the great powers and who nevertheless run with the devastating consequences of a warlike confrontation. When the wind blows is a story that deeply touches us and that reinforces its impact thanks to the soundtrack composed by Roger Waters and performed by him and The Bleeding Heart Band (Phil Collins appears in the credits of some song also); It's sad, yes, but it's worth seeing.
Lo que sucede a partir de entonces es una historia bastante triste. No quiero dar muchos detalles porque ya he contado bastante de la película, pero me recordó a esa otra cinta animada de la época, La tumba de las luciérnagas, no sólo por la similitud de ciertos elementos (una bomba atómica en medio de una guerra) sino por el destino que sufren los inocentes, personas que no tienen que ver directamente con las luchas entre las grandes potencias y que sin embargo corren con las devastadoras consecuencias de un enfrentamiento bélico. When the wind blows es una historia que nos toca profundamente y que refuerza su impacto gracias a la banda sonora compuesta por Roger Waters e interpretada por él y The Bleeding Heart Band (Phil Collins aparece en los créditos de alguna canción también); es triste, sí, pero vale la pena verla.
