Colin Trevorrow Out, J.J. Abrams Set To Direct Star Wars Episode IX!!

in #movies7 years ago (edited)

Hello movie marauders! Colin Trevorrow (director of Jurassic World) was set to helm Episode IX. After some creative differences with Lucasfilm, he was kicked off the project. J.J. Abrams, who directed Episode VII (The Force Awakens), will now close out the trilogy by writing and directing the 9th episode. (Apparently, Rian Johnson-dir. of Episode VIII-was also asked to direct Episode IX, but he turned it down). Now, doesn't this sound familiar? Han Solo directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller were also released from the project over creative differences (the director is now Ron Howard). We are going to discuss more about this further in the article, so don't worry. As we all know, Star Wars: The Last Jedi (Episode VIII), will be released this December. Let's hope that it turns out to be even better than The Force Awakens! Now, let's discuss more about the Episode IX director switchup!!

Why Colin Trevorrow Isn't Directing Episode IX Anymore

Clearly Lucasfilm did not like the direction Trevorrow was going with his directing/writing. I'm not sure exactly what Lucasfilm didn't agree on. Possibly the story, but we really don't know. I mean Episode IX closes out the entire trilogy, so it's a very big deal. It is a shame, because I really liked Trevorrow's work on Jurassic World.

It's not just him who was kicked off Episode IX, but writer Jack Thorne was replaced with Chris Terrio. This is definitely worrisome. Lucasfilm is just all over the place with picking directors, so they can meet their release dates. But these films need time, so they can turn out to be spectacular. Making this creative differences mistake twice is a little concerning. I just hope that this has taught Lucasfilm to take their time picking directors. Force Awakens is still a very good film, but I don't want the same story with new characters, but a true continuation. How will The Last Jedi turn out? It is coming out very soon, and I am extremely excited (counting down the days excited!!) (It is directed by Rian Johnson--dir. of Looper).   I like that The Last Jedi because it is a new director, so it will hopefully not be a copy of The Empire Strikes Back. I just hope that Lucasfilm doesn't keep picking directors, and then letting them go. They should research it more to make sure it is the right fit. Please Lucasfilm, you are our only hope.

Below is the teaser trailer for The Last Jedi, because it is awesome & I'm putting it out there that I want more trailers. So please enjoy!

Why J.J. Abrams Was The Chosen One (haha get it!)

There is only one reason that Abrams was picked for Epsiode IX. Are you ready for it? It is because he is a safe bet. Kathleen Kennedy (Lucasfilm President) even said,

"With The Force Awakens, J.J. delivered everything we could have possibly hoped for, and I am so excited that he is coming back to close out this trilogy."

Well the delivery Abrams made was the money, product placement, and satisfied fans. The Force Awakens was a huge success! It made $2.066 billion (that's A LOT of money!) It sits at #3 of all time worldwide box office grosses. This tells Lucasfilm that if they go with Abrams, he will definitely bring them in tons of more money AND make a good movie that fans will enjoy.

Below is the trailer for A New Hope The Force Awakens:

Yes, it may feel right for Abrams to finish what we started, but he is ultimately the safest thing Lucasfilm can do. They know that they can work well with Abrams, which has been a clear issue for Lucasfilm and their directors. At least Lucasfilm was able to see that Trevorrow was not going to work out before they started to really shoot the movie. My concern for Episode IX is that it will just be a copy of Return Of The Jedi. Don't get me wrong, J.J. Abrams is a great director, but I didn't like the direction that The Force Awakens went in because it was the same plot as A New Hope.

Conclusion

I understand that Lucasfilm has set dates & wants to release all these Star Wars films, but they have to take the time to choose the right creative team. I hope The Last Jedi and Epsiode VIII turn out to be their own story that fans will love even more than Episode VII.
