THEORETICAL BASIS

DID or multiple personality can be defined as a mental disorder whereby a person who has it will show two or more personalities (alters) each with different names and characters.

Those who have this disorder actually have only one personality, but the sufferer will feel that he has many identities that have different ways of thinking, temperament, grammar, memory and interaction to the environment.

Although the cause can not be ascertained, but the average psychologist agrees that the cause of this disorder in general is due to childhood trauma.

To understand how many identities can form within a person, we must first understand the meaning of Dissociative (dissociation).
Dissociation

Have you ever had an experience like this: When you are asking something about your friends, you get an unrelated answer. If ever, then I am sure, when you get that answer, you will say "No connect!".

Simple dissociation can be interpreted as a breaking connection between one's thoughts, feelings, actions and feelings with the current awareness or situation.

In the case of DID, there is also a dissociation, but much more complicated than just "not connecting".

The process of formation of multiple personalities
When we grow up, we have enough character and personality to deal with life's problems. However, in children under seven years of age, that power has not yet emerged so they will look for other ways to resist a traumatic experience, namely with Dissociation.

By using this method, a child can make his conscious mind irrespective of the terrible experience that befell him.

According to Colin Ross who wrote the book The Osiris Complex (1995), the dissociation process in children who lead to DID disorders consists of two psychological processes. We will take the example of sexual abuse experienced by a girl.

The First Process:

girls who repeatedly experience sexual abuse will try to deny this experience in their minds in order to be free of extreme pain. He can experience an "out of body experience" that makes him "detached" from his body and from the ongoing traumatic experience. She may feel her spirits float up to the ceiling and imagine herself looking at other girls who are being sexually abused. In other words, a new and different identity has emerged.

The Second Process:

a memory barrier is then built between the girl and the new identity that has been created.

Now, a new consciousness has been formed. The sexual harassment never happened to her and she could not remember anything about it.

If sexual harassment continues, the process will continue over and over again so that it will re-create many new identities to overcome them. When the habit of dissociation is ingrained, the child will also create a new identity for things that are not related to a traumatic experience such as going to school or play with friends.

One of the most prominent dual personality cases, that is, Sybil, is said to have 16 different identities.

According to the psychologist, the number of different identities can be more in some cases, even up to 100. Each identity has a different name, age, gender, race, style, way of speaking and character.

Each of these characters can take over the mind of the sufferer in just a few seconds. This takeover process is called switching and is usually triggered by stressful conditions.

Characteristics of multiple personality

  • There must be two or more different identities or awareness within the person.

  • These personalities repeatedly take over the person's behavior (Switching).

  • There is an inability to recall important information pertaining to her that is too unusual to be regarded as just plain forgetting.

  • These disturbances do not occur because of the psychological effects of substances such as alcohol or drugs or because of medical conditions such as fever.

Of these four points, point number 3 plays a very important role.

98 percent of those with DID experience amnesia when an identity occurs (switching). When the main personality manages to take over, he can not remember what happened when his previous identity came to power.

Although most psychologists have acknowledged this multiple personality disorder, others have refused to acknowledge its existence.

Mystery In DID

For example, when an identity arises, biological changes also occur within the body of the person. Her heart rate can change, as does her body temperature, blood pressure and even the ability to see.

Then, different identities may have different reactions to treatment. Sometimes, a healthy person may have an allergic identity. When the identity is mastered, it really becomes allergic to a certain substance.
