if that is what is going on then it does appear it would be for purely personal gain. There are certainly enough minnows who are writing well and could use the uplift to not have to resort to creating bogus accounts.
Having said that, have you considered the possibility that @msgivings is a friend of a whale or two and they are supporting because of that?
