POLL - Time To Ditch Spotify & SoundCloud?

I recently read this post by @djlethalskillz and it got me thinking about whether we should really be supporting the "old school" platforms that don't reward us financially as independent musicians?

Now I appreciate that there's more value in Spotify & SoundCloud, etc. as far as community and trying to grow your fanbase but I would argue that these things are now becoming even better on sites like Steemit, Whaleshares & BitTube to name just a few!

So I started a poll on Twitter and I would appreciate a few seconds of your time to have your say so we can gauge the current feeling towards this.

Feel free to comment with your views on this post too!

Cheers!

So Glad u brought it up and kudos on the mention mah man! I salute u always.

I voted 100% but we both know its a bit too early we need all at the moment but good to put the blockchain in front, in a way do exclusive releases or special music creations on the blockchain that listeners wont find on the commercial centralized platforms out there.

Looking forward to the poll result!

I dont think that blockchain-music-technology will ever replace spotify, deezer and apple music. mainly because all the mainstream is there. I believe that in the independent-music sector a lot is going to change but a lot of "listeners" enjoy the fact that most of their favourite music is available on spotify. Those users collected artists, album and saved playlists for a couple of years now which makes them even more dependent to this platform. Also, even when you consider yourself "not mainstream", the line between independent music and mainstream is very blurry. some ppl might start out with madonna and end up listening to chinese grind core (of course that always happens if you listen too much madonna ;-))
So keeping your music on spotify is a good idea so new fans can discover it and if you are able to catch some of them with a newsletter subscription you can send them to new blockchain-platforms.

Off to purchase the domain name "ChineseGrindCore.io".... :P

check out this documentary about Global Metal: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1249171/
there is a part about chinese metal ;-)

Using online to promote your music has always been about being available where your audience is. CDBaby has done a good job of helping with digital distro. It does cost but, at least they made the effort of connecting all of the digital platforms to their members who originally signed up with CDBaby to distribute compact discs.

Facts are facts: Nobody wants to pay for music anymore. The "mainstream" sites like Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer, Tidal, Jango, etc., all take a HUGE cut of your blood, sweat and tears, if you are a musician. Blockchain changes that equation. Blockchain may be underground right now but, eventually, it will be a part of the global economic quilt in a major way.

I still give away my music in person and digitally. When you are self-promoting, you are always giving SOMETHING away for nothing. Just make certain that you start and maintain not only a business for your band but, also have a music publishing business that is yours as well. This way you not only have the rights of the creation covered but, the rights of publishing is all owned by you. Never sign those away to some distro company, or label.

I like Soundcloud and use it only for rough sketches of my songs that I wish to share, like bonus tracks. This way I can give people a taste and connect but, still have a polished studio version I can sell. All of the online apps can be used this way. It is really about how you want to use them. And what level of time you have available to update them.

Now if there was only...somebody...anybody...who is trying to link artists to each other and all these sites together...hmm...I wonder...who...that could be...

:D 'nuff said.
