My Vinyl Obsession - Record of the Day #1

in #music7 years ago (edited)

Hello, its my first day here on Steemit, and loving it so far.

So, I am one of those mid 40's guys who have become obsessed with collecting vinyl. It started innocently enough, with buying this old beauty here for a bargain at a second hand store

Since then I have upgraded to this awesome Duel deck

And now have around 900 albums.

Which brings me to the point of this blog post. I am a terrible decision maker, so use a random generator to decide what record i am going to listen too next (this can be an interesting journey as I have fairly wide tastes - sometimes i go from German Grindcore to American Bluegrass). Anyway thought it would be fun to take you all on this journey with me and see what records we get to listen to....so without further ado heres the first one. (and i swear this hasnt been rigged!!)

This is the 1995 USA Impulse Reissue on 200gm wax, and sounds divine.

Undoubtably one of the most important records ever made. Originally released in 1965, at a time where Coltrane was at his peak. Its avant-garde and free, yet still grounded in jazz sensibilities. It takes me to a different place every time i listen to it. Its almost other worldly.

For those not familiar, the album is comprised of 4 suites, each alluding to Coltranes spiritual awakening at the time, which steered him off the booze and junk (for awhile anyway).

  1. Acknowledgment
  2. Resolution
  3. Persuance
  4. Psalm

It is not just Trane who is smoking on this piece though, the band comprising Jimmy Garrison on bass, Elvin Jones on drums and McCoy Tyner on piano, is widely considered to be his best and tightest outfit. They never overshadow Coltranes playing, but are right there in the pocket with him. It is incredible to think this piece was recorded in only 2 days, and truly deserves its place as one of the best albums ever recorded (not just in jazz but in popular music)

This is an essential listen if you have yet to partake, and an even more essential listen for those who have but havent heard it for ages!

Looking forward to see what we are spinning tomorrow!

I can totally empathize with the difficulty of making a decision on content consumption! How do you randomize? Do you just assign your albums numbers and then use a random generator? I like the concept, we tend to fall into ruts too often and leave parts of our libraries and collections unexplored.

I have my collection catalogued on the Discogs site - which comes with a handy "Random Item" button! Well worth doing - time consuming getting everything on there, but also handy for insurance, values etc

Although a simpler version if you couldnt be bothered looking up particular pressings etc would be to just do a simple excel, and yeh use a random number generator!
