Top 10 Albums of Each Year Part 8 - 1967

in #music4 years ago (edited)

1967 arrives. Lots of great stuff. (Made a mistake on the last post and couldn't fix it properly)

The Velvet Underground & Nico - The Velvet Underground & Nico

Number 1 for 1967. Number 5 overall!
The Velvet Underground & Nico is a strange album. It's dirty and unrefined with some of the strangest clean vocals I've ever heard, but there's some amazing songs on here, as well as incredible range and experimentation. Going from the upbeat "Femme Fatale" to the sinister and intimidating "Venus in Furs" is just insane. I find a few of the songs on here fairly bland and this album doesn't excite me a whole lot but it's still solid, and very unique. There's also a viola.
My Rating: 8/10
RYM Rating: 4.26 from 38,857 ratings.
Genre: Art Rock, Experimental Rock, (Proto-Punk, Noise Rock, Garage Rock, Psychedelic Rock)

The Doors - The Doors

Number 2 for 1967. Number 31 overall.
This album is just incredibly enjoyable. I love the atmosphere, the riffs, the solos, the instrumentation from everyone else, the singing. It's hollistically excellent. It is noticeably aged compared to newer music of course but it makes it very comfy. It is a bit weaker in the second half (apart from the excellent The End) and it doesn't do anything monumentally special, it just does little wrong.
My Rating: 9/10
RYM Rating: 4.12 from 25,753 ratings.
Genre: Psychedelic Rock, (Blues Rock, Acid Rock)

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band - The Beatles

Number 3 for 1967. Number 34 overall.
I think this is a bit of a step down from Revolver, but it's still great. There's some interesting themes and concepts on here but the songs don't excite me as much as most of the ones on Revolver.
My Rating: 8/10
RYM Rating: 4.15 from 36,721 ratings.
Genre: Psychedelic Pop, Pop Rock, (Art Rock, Psychedelic Rock, Baroque Pop, Sunshine Pop)

Are You Experienced - The Jimi Hendrix Experience

image.png

Number 4 for 1967. Number 54 overall.
As everyone knows, Jimi Hendrix is an incredible guitarist, and his exceptional riffs are the star of the show here. Even so, the drums on this album are incredible! They fit very well and are super impressive. And as a heavy metal fan the heavier tone of this album compared to the previous rock albums on this list appeals to me a whole lot.
Really fantastic album.
My Rating: 9/10
RYM Rating: 4.15 from 20,320 ratings.
Genre: Blues Rock, Psychedelic Rock, Acid Rock, (Hard Rock)

Songs of Leonard Cohen - Leonard Cohen

Number 5 for 1967. Number 76 overall.
Very sad tone. The monotinicity of Cohen's voice and the repetitive guitar strumming is hypnotic and emotional and creates a really solemn atmosphere. It is a very immersive album. It peaks in the first song but it's fantastic the whole way through.
My Rating: 9/10
RYM Rating: 4.15 from 14,596 ratings.
Genre: Contemporary Folk, Singer/Songwriter, (Chamber Folk)

The Piper at the Gates of Dawn - Pink Floyd

Number 6 for 1967. Number 100 overall.

The first word that comes to my mind with this album is 'weird'. It is just a really weird album. The vocals and instruments both contribute to this. The soft and jovial but slightly unhinged vocals combined with the sort of rolling guitars and drums on the first song Astronomy Domine make a nice psychedelic and dreamy atmosphere. Lucifer Sam is a fantastic track and it adds to the psychedelic aspect with the going in and out the left and right headphones. It's pretty wacky but cool. Really nice riff too. The long Interstellar Overdrive with lots of intersecting parts is another highlight. As the song progresses it becomes very claustrophobic with lots of sounds arriving and disappearing, it's a brilliant piece of work. Of course, not all the songs are this good. The Piper At the Gates of Dawn is a great album.
My Rating: 8/10
RYM Rating: 3.90 from 24,972 ratings.
Genre: Psychedelic Rock, Psychedelic Pop, (Space Rock, Experimental Rock)

Magical Mystery Tour - The Beatles

Number 7 for 1967. Number 107 overall.
Better than Sgt. Peppers... slightly. Sgt Pepper's is consistently great, but this album has a few really fantastic songs like "Hello Goodbye" and "Strawberry Fields Forever". Another great Beatles album.
My Rating: 8/10
RYM Rating: 4.07 from 23,200 ratings.
Genre: Psychedelic Pop, Pop Rock, (Psychedelic Rock, Sunshine Pop, Art Rock, Art Pop)

Forever Changes - Love

image.png

Number 8 for 1967. Number 110 overall.
I'm not a massive fan of this album, it has some really great songs like 'Maybe the People Would Be the Times or...' but the rest ends up feeling a bit...flat to me. I wasn't drawn to this album as much as the others from this year. I feel like there's potential here though, and it's definitely still and enjoyable album.
My Rating: 7/10
RYM Rating: 4.05 from 16,353 ratings.
Genre: Psychedelic Pop, Psychedelic Rock, Psychedelic Folk, (Baroque Pop, Psychedelic Folk)

Strange Days - The Doors

image.png

Number 9 for 1967. Number 195 overall.
Title track is quite a sinister psychedelic banger. I am absolutely in love with the guitar playing on this album, they're psychedelic, funky, and really varied. The Doors managed to make an album that matches their fantastic debut album, in the same year no less!
My Rating: 9/10
RYM Rating: 3.95 from 14,195 ratings.
Genre: Psychedelic Rock, (Blues Rock, Acid Rock, Psychedelic Pop)

Axis: Bold as Love

image.png

Number 10 for 1967. Number 201 overall.
Spanish Castle Magic is an incredible psychedelic rocker up there with Hendrix's best, with ferocious guitar and bass-playing that just doesn't let up and Little Wing is an atmospheric ballad-y song which reminds me a bit of Pink Floyd. Excellent songs. Not a favourite album of mine but Hendrix's skill is undeniable and a pleasure to listen to.
My Rating: 8/10
RYM Rating: 3.99 from 13,106 ratings.
Genre: Psychedelic Rock, Blues Rock, (Hard Rock, Acid Rock)

1967 ended up being one hell of a year! There's a whole bunch of fantastic albums here, with both The Doors albums being particular favourites.
