“Spooky,” covered by Lydia Lunch … (Pop / No Wave – Music to Your Ears, Covers–7)

This smooth cover of “Spooky” is quite listenable and even upbeat.

Lydia Lunch – “Spooky”

“Spooky” (1980 – original from 1966)

The mellow, jazzy pop tune “Spooky” was covered by Lydia Lunch in 1980.

The song was originally an instrumental piece, having been written in 1966 for saxophone. In 1967, lyrics were added for a version by the band Classics IV, which became a hit of sorts in the US and the UK in 1968.

Back to Sax

Subsequently, a catchy pop version was recorded by Dusty Springfield, followed by various other versions by artists ranging from Martha and The Vandellas to the Velvet Monkeys. In 1996, the prominent alto saxophonist David Sanborn recorded an excellent instrumental version.

Lydia Lunch

Lydia Lunch is a poet, singer, actress, writer, and performer who gained notoriety in New York’s post-punk no-wave scene. Much of her early work was loud, noisy, and confrontational.

Although her 1980 solo album “Queen of Siam” was gloomy and even depressing at points, it was much more accessible than her previous work. This smooth cover of “Spooky,” one of its stand-out tracks, is quite listenable and even upbeat.   (Image source)

In the cool of the evening
When everything is getting kinda groovy
I call you up and ask you
If you'd like to go with me and see a movie
First you say no, you've got some plans for the night
Then you stop and say "alright"

Love is kinda crazy with a spooky little boy like you

You always keep me guessing
I never seem to know what you are thinking
And if a girl looks at you
It's for sure your little eye will be a-winking
I get confused 'cause I don't know where I stand
And then you smile and hold my hand

Love is kinda crazy with a spooky little boy like you
Spooky

Maybe someday you'll decide to stop these games
That you've been playing
I'm gonna tell you all the things my heart's
Been dying to be saying
Just like a ghost you've been haunting my dreams
So I proposed on Halloween

Love is kinda crazy with a spooky little boy like you
