Music Review

This artist/composer has a wide range of musical styles and instrument emulations built into the music and this might not become obvious after you listen to just one song/composition, but it will become clear when you listen to all of them. The first track on the Soundcloud page (at the time of writing these lines) is called ‘Vulnerable Rebellion’. The song starts off with a beautiful female voice and synthesiser sounds that sound like they could take you on an amazing journey. The guitars kick in at around 45 seconds and as soon as they do, this song starts to rock. What follows is basically a 4-minute guitar solo with plenty of pinched harmonics and just the right amount of ‘shredding’ (playing fast) for my taste. Toward the end the lovely vocals start again, this time accompanied by the rhythm guitar and the drums. This track definitely has Enya influences (the vocals), but the guitars and drums give it a nice rock twist. The other interesting thing to mention here is that the guitars are simulations and I believe the vocals are as well, meaning no actual guitars or vocals were used making this track, which is very impressive as the guitars and vocals sound very real. The lead guitar even features pinched harmonics. Another thing worth mentioning is that this entire composition was done in one take, without any overdubbing! VDXi claims this took him quite a while to get right in one take and I certainly believe that!

The second song on the Soundcloud page is called ‘Voice of The Mountains’ and it features some really catchy acoustic guitars and again a lovely female voice that one might actually call the ‘voice of the mountains’. This is a very positive tune that somehow brings me back to all the good times I had when I was snowboarding and wandering in the mountains of Austria. The thing to note here once again is that the acoustic guitar and vocals are emulated. I can definitely envision this track (or parts of it) being used for a film scene or an advertisement about the alps, or a mountain related video.

The following song is where things start to get fascinating. The composition is called ‘A Greek In Vienna’, originally done by Fivos Valachis, a Greek Composer who plays many instruments, including piano and guitar. So the interesting thing here is that VDXi virtually re-orchestrated the entire thing, and in his own words ‘I ended up adding some orchestral bits that seemed nice to me.’ This may seem strange at first, until you realise that he not only added a very wide range of (virtual) instruments, such as a piano, oboe, bells, flutes and much more; but the crazy thing is that he can’t read music, so all of this was done by ear! I have never heard anything this good by someone who can’t read music. As the comments under the track on Soundcloud confirm, this is indeed a masterpiece. Even the original composer Fivos Valachis commented on this and said that VDXi has done beautiful work and I absolutely agree.

The next two songs that are displayed in the ‘Spotlight’ section on Soundcloud are part of the album called ‘VDX Music’. This entire album is also available to listen to on the Soundcloud page and once again I can only recommend you check it out! It certainly shows the versatility of this artist and it will take you on a journey you didn’t even know you needed to take! The album starts off with a song called ‘Married Violins’ and as a comment on the page suggests ‘I could be fooled into believing this is from the 1700s’. The second composition is much more modern, although there are classical elements in there and it works well together. This song also features a great bass line, which give it a little 80s vibe. The following composition stays with the 80s vibe and since I love 80s music this is great to hear. This is another one that features a guitar emulation and while this sounds more like a synthesiser it is really well arranged to compliment the bass line and the drums. Track number 4 is called ‘Desire For You’ and here a flute (as well as other instruments) emulation was used, which sounds just beautiful. This is followed by a mystical, dark sounding composition called ‘Lost In Purgatory’, another 80s inspired tune with a killer bass line and synth sounds that compliment the bass line and the drums perfectly. ‘Wild Cat in Space’ is a song that actually sounds like a wild cat that might be having fun in space - it may sound strange when you read these lines, but it sure sounds great and the synth really has the perfect effect that makes it sound like a cat that is meowing. ‘Noisy Forrest’ is another rocking song with folk elements included. Track number 8 is called ‘Night Dancer’ and this is definitely a song to dance to. This is followed by a lovely piano composition, which features other instruments at times to make it sound even sweeter. The tenth track is called ‘Pictured Waltz’ and here the versatility of VDXi comes to shine yet again, as this composition is almost Medieval sounding, but again all the instruments are emulations. ‘Metallic Reasoning’ is a composition that was made using Korg Wavestation, a vector synthesis synthesiser, which sounds awesome in my opinion. Song 12 is called ‘Natives’ and this composition features outstanding drums; once again it’s hard to believe these are all emulations! The album ends with a ‘Message of Hope’, a composition that is very thoughtful, deep and indeed it gives you a sense of hope. A fine choice for the final track of this album.

Another more recent track by VDXi is called ‘Fractured Laguna’. This is a very deep tune with beautiful guitar and string emulations. ‘Aging in Native America’ is another recent composition, this one is very calming and relaxing to listen to. Another interesting composition is ‘Preview of The Failed’ as it includes ‘a bunch of ‘failed’ tracks’, as VDXi calls it. This is quite an interesting way of giving people a nice little preview of this artist that is perhaps unfortunately titled ‘failed tracks’, when they are really work in progress. I think many artists go back and improve tracks, sometimes years later, once their level of mastery has improved. This is something that this artist may follow suite one day, although his level of mastery is already very high.

There are even more tracks to listen to on the Soundcloud page and I invite you to once again check it out! This artist is extremely versatile and certainly has an amazing ear for melodies that are catchy enough so that they will stay in your head, yet complex enough to keep you entertained. One thing that makes VDXi interesting to me is the fact that this artist/composer is completely self-taught, which gives the music an authentic, unidirectional feel, which is refreshing to hear, in my opinion. Interesting find and share indeed. Will have to spend a bit more time to listen to the works of VDXi. This guy is already active for a long time, so it seems but doesn't have a large following based on Soundcloud. I wonder why. He doesn't seem to be with Spotify.
