I started remembering that one of the dancer's husbands recorded something and went looking for it on YouTube. It's one of the last times I played. I didn't realize that what I mostly have saved are some photos but no videos that I can remember taking probably because we played mostly outside in city events, festivals, parades, fundraisers and 5K runs and I found it hard to capture the sound when playing outside.
It is always so engaging with the audience (me) with those tribal drums going in their presence. I know this is characteristic of them, but, still.. it is most enjoyable to watch and listen to.
You have captured an important part of them and I love it. What an honor to be part of such a group. Are you still doing this?
Thank you again for posting these. They are absolutely sweet moments in life that can never be duplicated!

I haven't played or practiced for about 10 years. Up until last year the only thing I did was to play for the Cheyanne Mountain Zoo's big annual fundraiser where for a month I would practice and do pushups to get ready but I brought along drummers who play regularly and made me look good. Because my drums had been sitting in the garage all this time I sold and gave away most of them last summer.
Oh, well. I have many things that I loved so much slide to the side... I wonder why we do that? Especially since you seemed so very intune with it all? Have you ever thought about resuming it to some degree???
Health was my issue of stopping almost everything I was doing. I would say I am somewhat getting back into it because of wanting to raise money for Feather's Tale Children's Village with this Vlog. I won't be able to play like I use to which takes some strength, endurance and toughening of the hands.
How awesome!!!
Nobody does anything like they used to! Celebrate the fact that you want to and you will be doing it. And time with give you the strength, endurance and toughening of your hands.
Betcha by golly, wow!
Good luck!
I was wondering if there is like a drum leader. Or like when the tempo starts to change, who starts that?
Yes, The dancer or the clock let's the soloist who marks the dancers steps know when to up the tempo. There is a signal piece in the rhythm called the "break" that lets the drummers know what to do and all throughout the dance lets the dancers know when to change the step or situation and to end the piece.
Short pieces like this we do for shows but to play for the average dance class a rhythm is played nonstop for about twenty minutes for a warm up which is not terribly hard to do but when drumming the main rhythm for the dance class we have to get prepared to play for forty-five minutes with the last fifteen to twenty minutes at jet speed. I really have no interest in doing that anymore.
Oh yes thank you. It is very interesting to learn about. Like I was in high school band, but of course everything is sheet music.
From watching the video, I can really appreciate the mental concentration as well as the physical effort required! I swear I would be cramping up half way through! I always appreciate your time in answering! Except you didnt like my stink eye pic LOL. I dont blame you, it is pretty scary heheheh!!
For me there is something so relaxing about listening to drums like this in Summer here that have drum circles at the beach once a month which draws many drummers and a good crowd I try to catch it as many times as I can
I remember that's how it use to be for me too. I would make it a point if not a destination to hear the drums. I may post a little bit of "how to" join in on a drum circle and what makes one good.
That would be cool to read, I am not musical at all I cannot even clap in time with a tune, but I do love being at a drum circle
I am considered a pretty good drum teacher around here. I think that is because I was so bad. My brain fought doing a rhythm pattern repetitively and I found it very hard for me to learn especially the way it is usually taught. I had no sense of timing and like you couldn't clap to the pulse or even find the pulse. I had to live and almost sleep with a metronome to get the consistency in my body.
That’s really interesting to know but in my case it may we’ll be you can’t teach an old dog new tricks
I think you would be surprised. Most people who came to my class thought the same thing and after the third lesson were well on their way and just needed to build endurance. It's a decent upper body workout. I did find accountants seemed to struggle the most but they also never gave up.
II must admit growing up the instrument i have always bene most interested in was the drums, I think I was put off in school, when after maybe 3 or 4 classes of MUsic the teachers said to me, we all have talents in some areas, and talking with other teachers you excel in academic and sports but some also are not suited for some things and music is not for you, and told me i didnt have to come to the class again,
Maybe when I retire and have more free time I may give it a go :)
