Quite a few years ago, I took a photo of some Red Piranhas swimming around on display at an aquarium. I have always had a fascination with the piranha, especially since a pet store in my neighborhood in the Bronx had a few on display in a tank. They weren't for sale, though. Any fan of horror movies can recall how these toothy fish would gather and rip the flesh off of unsuspecting humans. I was relieved to find out recently that these stories are not true to their nature. However, they will bite when being handled. They really like to feed on other fish, insects and worms.
Pictured are some Red Piranha, or more commonly known as the Red-bellied Piranha. These Pygocentrus Nattereri have been known to be used as weapons by some of the people that are native to South America. The adults feed at dawn and dusk. I still imagine it would be dangerous to be bleeding around an entire school of them.
Hello @domgreg
This is great news about the piranha fish!
It's one of the reasons I have not wanted to ever go to South America. LOL.

When I first moved out to Cali over 20 years ago, I stayed at a friend of a friend’s house for about a month. He had a huge tank of red bellies and I was fascinated with them. So cool.
