Is Bimini Road a Natural Formation or Ancient Ruins?

Not far off the Coast of Bimini, in the Bahamas, rests an underwater formation consisting of roughly rectangular beach rock blocks, arranged in a linear structure, measuring approximately 0.8 Kilometres in length and resembling a road.

The Formation was discovered by J. Manson Valentine in September 1968 while diving, off the Northwest coast of North Bimini Island. After it’s initial discovery, the site has been visited by numerous professional researchers, whom found and additional two pavement like structures that lie parallel to the Bimini Road.

The Bimini Road structure contains blocks as large 3 to 4 Metres, with more defined edges, whereas the parallel pavements are made of smaller, more rounded stones.

For many years, the origin of the Bimini Road has been hotly debated, with some saying that the road was formed naturally and others contending that it was man made and possibly the remains of Atlantis.

The Natural Theory, explains that it is common for beach rock to crack in to a tile like structures that have the appearance of being man made. However, there are some facts that could disprove this theory:

  • In 1980, investigators took samples at Bimini road. From the samples, they extracted Micrite, Aragonite and Calcite which does not occur in beach rock and seems to indicate that the rocks could be man made.

  • Additionally, most geologists claim that the Bimini Road is a natural occurrence, which would mean that if you lifted the rocks, only sand and water bed should be beneath the Bimini stones. But, in 2006, Dr. Greg Little led a team of researchers on a dive at Bimini Road, and what they found was an entire second layer of square-cut rocks with similar dimensions beneath the stones Bimini Road, therefore proving that Bimini Road is not a natural formation and must have been made by man.

But if it is not a natural formation, could it be remains of Atlantis?

This theory is based on a man called Edgar Cayce, whom was an American psychic that allegedly possessed the ability to answer questions on subjects such as healing, wars, Atlantis and future events while in a trance. In 1940, Cayce predicted that Atlantis would rise again.

He said "Poseidia will be among the first portions of Atlantis to rise again. Expect it in ''68 and '69; not so far away!" According to the Cayce readings, Poseidia was the "western section of Atlantis," and the area off Bimini is the highest point of this sunken land.

There are however some facts that could disprove this theory too.

  • According to Plato, Atlantis was around nine thousand years old. The stones found at Bimini Road have been dated by radio carbon dating. Archaeologists found that according to radio carbon dating the stones are apparently two thousand to four thousand years old, therefore proving to be too young to be a part of Atlantis.

The last Theory that Exists is a very likely one and is knows as the Menzies’ Theory.

The Theory was created by Gavin Menzies whom proposed that the road is a submerged emergency dry rock used by a Chinese Imperial fleet exploring the Caribbean between 1421 and 1423.

Menzies suggests that the ships were caught in a storm and that to commence repairs, the fleet had to create a dry dock using their large, rectangular ballast stones. Here are a few facts that support this theory.

  • Since sea levels were approximately six feet lower six centuries ago, Menzies believes that the now submerged Bimini Road stones were once on the shore of North Bimini Island.

  • In 2006, Dr Little also discovered a series of heart shapes rocks, with un-natural holes bore in their centres, some with multiple holes. He believed that these for more than likely used for anchors of dome sorts which supports the Menzies Theory.

Which one of these theories is the true origin of Bimini Wal, or is it something entirely different altogether? Will we ever know?
