The cow has an important meaning in many cultures and recently I have had the opportunity to take some pictures of cows which are kept outdoors in a field and I think the fog gives the pictures a very unique elegance. Cows were also of great importance in ancient Greece and in some areas the breeding of these animals was common among farmers and there has also arisen a huge cult around this animal where the cow has been considered as a sacrificial animal for the gods and there are some goddesses who have also been represented with the characteristics of a cow such as the goddess Hera who was also known as the goddess of protection or was known as the goddess of harvest and it can be said in general that she had great importance as a goddess of fertility. A well-known legend from Greek mythology is that of the white cow and this legend is about Io who was also known as the daughter of the god of the rivers Inachus and was a close confidant of the Hera and had taken the role of priestess in her cult and one day Zeus fell in love with Io who was also known as the husband of Hera and seduced her. There are different versions of this legend with other views and it is not quite clear whether Zeus had approached her with compulsion or it was based on each other, but in all versions his wife Hera gets wind of it and then becomes extremely jealous and decided to take revenge on Io and long thought Zeus how he could protect her until he came up with the idea of turning her into a white cow so that she can camouflage herself better. It didn't take long until Hera found that out and went in search of the white cow and when she had found it she demanded the cow and wanted to bring it into her own care to lock Io and let her guard by the mythical creature Argus who ensured that the Io was very afraid and it was almost impossible for her to escape. In one version the cow managed to escape, however, the happiness was not of long joy when she was subsequently pursued by Argus through the whole country and at the end of the long escape Hera had forbearance with her and decided to transform her back into a human figure and to forgive her which probably fit better to her divine role as a protector. The Ionian islands were also named after Io when she once passed this area on her escape and according to another version, it was the god Hermes who managed to kill Argus in order to free Io afterwards.
