Città di Napoli

Today I'm sharing some photos of the city of Naples, Italy. The first photo was taken in the historic center of the city at night. The historic center is characterized by it's narrow alleys and bustling market streets.

The second photo is Piazza San Domenico Maggiore in the evening. This is a very busy square as it's crossed by busy market streets.

In the center of the square is the tall obelisk of San Domenico. There are a few different obelisks throughout the city that were built to celebrate the end of the plague. This one was started in 1656 and finished in 1737.

Next is the Monument dedicated to Vittorio Emanuele II found in Piazza Giovanni Bovio. He was the first king of a united Italy.

The Basilica of San Francesco di Poala in Piazza del Plebescito lies directly across from the Royal Palace. There are a lot of events held in this plaza and a nice view of Mt. Vesuvius is just a few steps away.

This is part of a fountain a few steps away from the Gesù Nuovo plaza. There are many lion statues scattered around Naples, some of which were built to commemorate specific historic events and fallen Neapolitans throughout the city's history.

Lastly, is Castel Nuovo which is located right near the port. This castle was built in 1282 by Pierre de Chaulnes and rebuilt in 1479 by and Guillem Sagrera. There are a few other castles located throughout the city, one of which is perched high up on a hill above the city, Castel Sant'Elmo. I'll probably post photos of the city from Castel Sant'Elmo in a future post.

Naples is one of my favorite Italian cities to date. There are so many hidden gems waiting to be discovered here.

Beautiful photography of a stunning cityscape .. I've never been to Naples, but I've traveled through Italy and many European countries/cities, the sense of history/culture is enchanting, and the landscape captivating. If you have yet to visit I would highly recommend Eastern Europe, fairy tale castles, ancient crumbling cities and cobbled streets! Now I need a holiday! :)

I haven't yet. What castle should I consider?!

Yay!
