Nasa'nın 18 Nisan'da SpaceX Falcon 9 roketiyle uzaya gönderdiği TESS (Transiting Exo-planet Survey Satellite), dünya benzeri gezegenleri bulmak için insanlığın yeni gözü olmayı amaçlıyor. Bu görevi başarıyla yerine getireceğine dair ilk kanıtını da dün, Ay yörüngesinden aldığı yardımla oturduğu yeni yörüngesinde çektiği ilk fotoğrafla kanıtladı.
Gezegen Avcısı TESS'in İlk Fotoğrafı
TESS, 4 kamerasından birini gökkubbenin güney bölümünde bulunan Centaurus'a tuttu ve 2 saniyelik bir pozlamayla çektiği ilk fotoğrafı dünyaya gönderdi. Yukarıda da görünen fotoğraf 200 binden fazla yıldız barındırıyor. Sağ üst köşeye yakın bölümde Coalsack Nebula'sı varken sol alt tarafa daha yakın duran ve fotoğraftaki en parlak yıldız olarak da görünen yıldız ise Beta Centauri. TESS, barındırdığı 4 kamerayla birlikte bu fotoğraftan 400 kat daha fazla alanı tarayabilecek teknolojiye sahip. Gezegen avcılığında kullanılması beklenen ilk fotoğraf ise Haziran ayında gelecek ve sonrasında da iki yıl boyunca hiç durmadan gökkubbeyi tarayacak.
TESS'in Yörüngesi
TESS, Mayıs sonunda son bir ateşleme daha yaparak final yörüngesine oturacak. Geniş eliptik bir yörüngeye sahip olacak olan TESS, bu sayede gökkubbenin tamamını dünya ve ayın yansıttığı ışıklardan uzakta tarayabilecek. Gezegen avcısı teleskobun tam işler hale gelmesi ise Haziran ortasını bulacak.
NASA'nın Astrofizik Keşif Görevlerinden biri olan TESS, MIT laboratuvarlarından kontrol ediliyor olacak. Asıl yönetim birimi ise Maryland Greenbelt'te bulunan NASA Goddard Space Flight Center.
