Love is not about the other person, it can be only found within ourselves.
Love is a choice, is a state of mind. You either choose to love or not to.
You never get to choose who you love and who you don't or who should love you.
If you're in a state of love, people who are also filled with love will be naturally tuned to you.
Love is many times confused for other emotions, like we often say "love hurts".
Love can be only love and there's no pain and suffering in love. What we feel is usually other emotions, like we got left by our partner and we feel sad. We are not actually hurt by love, but we feel hurt because of events that naturally happens between people.
Feeling of sadness is another strong emotion we experience and it can be just as beautiful as any emotion.
Skill, that can be learned, to get even within yourself, forgiving yourself for everything you might do differently and to get the real message out of emotions, even the darkest ones. Out of that we get a clear message, not thoughts, but the instinct.
Looking for the solution from outside, like intoxicating yourself with drugs, meat, TV, white sugar, or even trying to find another person, a savior, that will bring us into the light, or following ideology, those will only give us a short term satisfaction and assurance.
The real thing is in us, we just need trust ourselves.
