Here's another species of bamboo that I use!

in #naturalproducts6 years ago (edited)

This is a very exciting clumping bamboo that I got from my neighbor just 5 years ago, and only within the last 2 years has needed a lot of pruning. I rarely consider that I prune it though, because it has so many uses that I try to keep it pruned just by using it.

Horses, sheep and cows will browse the leaves, thought I don't have any herbivores right now so these will just return to the ground.

Of course the most exciting uses for these large bamboo species is woody construction. These bamboos don't last as long as the guadua angustifolia that I have shown you in the past, but they do fine for almost 18 months before drying up and turning back into soil. This makes them perfect for temporary structures like roofs, fences or tendidos for hanging crops.

BONUS: 10 SBI units for anyone who can help me identify the scientific name for this bamboo that we locally call macana!

Cheers!

My theory? That properly designed and adapted agroforestry systems can out compete monoculture strategies in every variable, including calories/acre, profitabliltiy/acre and sequestration per acre.

Nice video!

Is this it?

Yes, I do believe it is bambusa vulgaris - did an app help you with that? Tell me more!

Awesome! This app is called Picture This. It identifies plants very accurately. It uses a picture to identify. I use it for free.

I watched your video and it was interesting natural bamboo. I think the scientific name for that kind of bamboo is Bambusa vulgaris, it is the variety of Striata. Thanks for sharing with us about agroforestry, @ecoinsyant.

I believe this is the first right answer!

I hope so, I am waiting for your next great works.

I don't know what kind of bamboo we have here in our garden in Northern Germany - but our guinea pigs love it, especially during the winter when that's the only thing they get that's really fresh.

Within the various genera of Bambu Bambusa, there are 120 species. Their trunks are woody, strong and hollow inside, which are used in construction.Hi @ecoinstant

This type of Bambu is called the "VEGETABLE STEEL" for the construction of huts or rudimentary houses (structure of the cabins). The roots are not as invasive as in other genera, so it has the advantage of being controlled in the garden soil.

This is how Angustifolia kunth (Macana type) or "Guadua Rolliza" is presented; Aware of the growing global deforestation due to the excessive use of wood at the industrial level, as one of the causes of the environmental crisis, it offers the guadua or macana as the main raw material in the development of construction and crafts in general. It is an optimal material, with physical-mechanical conditions, which is constituted as the best substitute for wood.

This species has countless possibilities and advantages applied to the industrial field, with excellent economic results, enormous profitability, wide prominence of products in international markets and an effective technological development for its processing. Found in the natural state in Colombia, it reaches 30 meters high and 22 centimeters in diameter and in this country two varieties have been identified that are also unique: Guadua Angustifolia Bicolor and Guadua Angustifolia Nigra.

Although my stay was a little upscale with a shared house rental, a friend of mine built a great hut-like structure out of bamboo on the beach in Goa, India back in the Full Moon Party days of the early 70's. Worked for the months we were there and a fairly large interior boulder worked as our hash stash. The best bank on the beach. 😎
