Hey Steemit community, today im going to bring you on an adventure to Krka National park which i visited while traveling to Croatia. The national park offers stunning views of the picturesque naturaly forming waterfalls, a true beauty of nature.

Standing in front of the waterfall it almost feels unreal, like a scene in the movie "Avatar". Where i live in Norway we have beautifull waterfalls but they dont compare to the waterfalls of Krka, with their pure blue water and green lush surroundings. Look at how pure the water is, you can see straight through it!

The formations of these waterfalls are only possible due to local geological conditions. Due to the nature of water choosing the "easiest" path to flow travertine structures are formed in the water with high concentrations of dissolved calcium bicarbonate Ca(HCO3)2. The picture bellow shows a "dead" waterfall, these formations are created by the water flowing for hundreds of years building up the sediment.

The nationals park also offers tours by boat. We chose to visit the island monestary of Visovac. The monestary is situated on an island to give the monks peace and seclusion from the outside world. Visovac was settled by Augustinian monks, who established a small monastery already in the 14th century.

The monestary has throughout history been a target due to the religious and policital conflicts in the region. First by the Ottoman empire who forced the monks to leave due to their continuous attacks. Later in the war of 1991 the Yugoslavian army occupied more than one third of Croatian territory wich they wanted to annex to "Great Serbia". There are accounts of Yugoslavian nationals burning catholic churches, bell-towers and monestaries and shooting crucifixes from point blank. Pictures of the damages are shown in the museum on the island.

The museum features alot of old books and scriptures. Below you can see a page taken from a herbary codex that is hundreds of years old. The guide told me that many of the monks liked to study nature and science. They also display old war memorabilia like the saber of Vuk Mandušić, a national war hero.

I totally recommend visiting Krka if you are in this part of Croatia, the nationals park offers not only pristine natural beauty but also alot of interesting history.
