How we dry our apples

in #nature8 years ago

We can not store our apples for a long time because we do not use any chemical pest control.
Friends of us dry their fruits in the kitchen on a screen.
We took an old cd rack and made our special drying system.

On the photos you can see apples which were there for 2 days.
To be really dry they need 4 or 5 days. We have Boskop apples and after drying they are still a little bit sour. They really taste great.

That's a nice system, especially since you have a wood stove. I've been thinking about planting a Boskoop apple. It is supposed to be a late variety here in the US Pacific Northwest, hanging on until late October. It's nice to know that it makes a good dried apple, too! Enjoy your bounty! :D

A gardener told us that the best time to plant a tree is late October. The ground must not be frozen. You also can plant in spring but then the tree grows fast and the roots do not grow that good. We normally plant in spring because it is warmer and it is more convenient. Boscop ist the best apple. :)

I better put one in the ground, then!

Yes and water it good. When the winter is dry please water it from time to time.
And enjoy the growing in spring.

Cool! I should also try something like that. But we don't have a heating stove...

You can also dry apples on places where the air is dry and the wind can blow. Maybe outside the house under a roof. It needs a longer time to dry then.

Very cool!

And sooooo tasty.

I tried some of those. They were super tasty. Good idea to reuse the cd rack. :)

Yes they are delicious.

Das erinnert mich an alte Zeiten. Cool

Früher haben viel mehr Leute ihr Obst gedörrt . Mir hat das schon immer geschmeckt und jetzt machen wir es selbst.
