Fox on deck!

in #nature7 years ago

We've had foxes visiting our garden for some time. We knew they were around again recently. The next door garden has gone wild, so they can hide in there. Last night we had a visit from a cub. It was pretty timid, but hung around long enough for me to get a picture. No sign of the parents this time. We found a dead one in the garden last year. It must be a tough life for them.

Cub

This was a previous visitor a few years ago. It spent a while jumping around the lawn. Obviously found something of interest there. It may have been after worms.

Before next door got totally overgrown we got to see a litter of four cubs being raised. They would play in a clearing and we could watch from our bedroom.

I know foxes are considered a pest by some, but we've had not much trouble with them. One did go for a chicken when they were out once, but just got some feathers. They don't seem to try and get into the chicken run and we keep watch when we let them out. The probably help control the local rats and mice, but they will have competition from all the cats around here. Those prey on birds too. There do seem to be less birds around the garden in recent years, but we have robins, blue tits, doves and blackbirds nesting here this year.

We're not feeding the foxes as we don't want to encourage them to get too tame.

They are famous for killing chickens and taking them away, hope yours are all safely in their pens.

@bingbabe tells me she sees them very early in the morning but like snakes I have still to see one in the wild. Maybe I walk around with my eyes closed?

These are sometimes our in the day. We made the chicken run fairly secure, but there's no sign of digging.

We used to have some rabbits that lived under our shed at our old house. One day they stopped showing up and a couple of days later I saw a fox walking in our back yard. I figured they must have taken over the space under the shed, so during the day I would brush my dog and shove the hair that I collected down the hole. They quickly left after that. Great pictures!

Wow that's wonderful to have nature like that in your garden. How folk can kill em is beyond me. They're beautiful :)

Looks like they may be playing on the slide ;-)

I've only see a couple of foxes here in Germany, and only very briefly as they were scampering into or out of the woods, or crossing a road. Any worries about rabies?

I don't think there's any rabies in the UK. It's partly down to being an island, but there are strict controls on bringing in animals.

Oh yeah that's right. I had a friend whose family moved to the UK and their dog was in quarantine for 6 month, you guys are fortunate. Rabies is horrible.

The German word for rabies is "Tollwut" which translated literally means: crazy-rage ;-)

Lovely creatures and nice attitude regarding "co-living" with them!

Great photographs @steevc. I didn't know foxes ate worms!! 😊

I think they will eat anything they can get. Seems they will eat plants too.

We dont have foxes but I hope I can see one in real life. Your place might have a good ecosystem. They look like doggies to me. Thank you for sharing.

Hi Steve. As a dweller of the concrete jungle, glimpses of wildlife is always very cool. We have our share of possums, raccoons, and coyotes but foxes seem to have more mystical personas. Good luck with the chickens and thanks for sharing.

We don't get them here now-a-days. When I was studying in college, A lot of them were there near the jungle. I was very fond of watching them as they were cute! :D

Yes,
We have many foxes here. Those who are seen occasionally. And they make a lot of noise in the night. However, the problem they create is that sometimes the chickens are stolen.
But whatever, they are a wealth of nature. And this is their life.

We'd probably feel differently if they killed our chickens, but they are well protected

there is probably a contribution to the ecosystem.
And I see these creatures quite cute :)

Great pictures and good to hear they don't hassle your chickens to much 👍☺

Just like in our apple garden, my family was always concerned about this issue but we never take any action against them because we do not them to harm..
After all they also have a life..
