I have no chance whatsoever to travel to Lapland this year! So annoying! Usually at this time, during the the 5th week of the year, I am skiing in Ylläs, Lapland, Finland. Usually I take a weeks holiday at this time. So I have to use my photos from last year, 2018.
I am dreaming of taking a train from Tampere to Kolari. Driving our car in the night's darkness onboard into the car wagon, and getting into the sleeping wagon myself. During the 11 hours train journey I am having a more or less decent sleep in the train.
In the morning at 11 AM we arrive in Kolari. We drive our car out of the train, and head for Äkäslompolo. Yes, you got it right: Äkäslompolo. Only in Lapland can they have village names like that. It sound slightly exotic even to Finnish speakers, who have lived most of their lives in the south of Finland.

In Äkäslompolo the first landmark is Jouni's shop. A place to buy first all you left at home. Jouni's shop is large enough and small enough. You can find all that is necessary there, but no luxuries. Right in front of Jouni's shop is a huge reindeer - not a real one, but it looks so real - except that it is much larger.

The real reindeer are on the Lapland mountains - and also in the forests and on the roads. So watch out when driving your car!
In the evening I climb on top of the Yllästunturi mountain. On the way I admire the dim beauty of the sacred nature, and fresh cold air.

Next morning the sun is shining, and I need my sunglasses when skiing or going out. I only do cross-country skiing. The birch-tree is also glimmering in the sunshine.

The next day is in a way bright, but slightly cloudy. The sun is not bright but it is shimmering behind the clouds.

This is my annual meditation, my holy purification experience that I will miss this year.
