My First Year On Steemit!

in #nature6 years ago (edited)

Good Morning!

This year on Steemit has definitely been interesting! Before blogging on here, I just posted to my Wordpress Blog(started it in 2012) maybe once or twice a month. I followed a few people and they followed me, but didn't really connect that much with people! I think that was probably my fault, because I was mostly posting and not commenting a lot. I just wanted to share a few photos of butterflies and flowers in my flower gardens.

My son @d-pend, convinced me to open a Steemit account - he was quite insistent that it wasn't that hard to get started and he was right! He helped me learn the ropes on the voting system and I've even bought a small amount of Steem over the last year.

Since @d-pend has been posting under poetry, I've ventured out and read a lot of poems on Steemit. I even listened in on the Poetry Class on Steem Schools a few times to hear poems read and discussed.

I've always loved to read books, but my least favorite thing in English class in high school and college was trying to read and interpret poems. I could never figure out how to satisfy the teacher or professor! This discouraged me from reading poems that had lots of depth. I decided it just wasn't my thing and so I breathed a sigh of relief when I finished my last required English class in college!

I continued on to take my math and computer science classes, to finish my math degree. I was a computer programmer for 9 years before I stayed home to raise my two children. I'm now a math/reading tutor and substitute teacher.

So my point is, all these years later, I'm now taking the time to read poems on Steemit and other places. I've learned that it's okay if I interpret them differently than someone else. Daniel's 100 Days of Poetry Challenge, showed me there are lot of people wanting to express themselves through poems. He gave me some tips about how to read his poems. He told me there wasn't an incorrect interpretation. I've read many poems from the beginners through the advanced poets - some who are published poets -( @yahialababidi and @prydefoltz).

I will have a future post where I share links of some of the poems I read - sorry there were so many people that entered the 1OO Days of Poetry Challenge I couldn't read all of them!

Steemit has drawn me to look at other "tags" that I don't post under. On Wordpress, I pretty much stuck to looking at butterflies and flower posts. On Steemit, I've met people that live all over the USA and world. Some are Americans, some are not.

I follow @mineopoly who posts his poetry and thoughts and is an American teaching in South Korea.

I've met professional photographers @dmcamera (she gives lots of great tips for taking photos) and @dbooster - he (also posted lots of famous haiku with his interpretations).

@ackhoo posts great sunset photos and @ewkaw post flowers/dried stuff photos.

@overkillcoin has given me lots of laughs with all of his ideas on how to handle spam or just plain dumb comments on our posts! He is a very talented illustrator and has a great sense of humor.

@old-guy-photos has made Tuesdays more fun and I use his treetuesday tag and read lots of posts with trees from all over the world!

@apanamamama and @crosheille are both women that post about their crafts, their lives with children and lots of other things. I enjoy their posts.

@hethur240 and @mother2chicks are also two more Steemians whose posts I enjoy. When I first got on Steemit, there was a post that @mother2chicks wrote that I thought she was writing about herself and was so convincing that I think I told her I hope she would get well soon or something like that. (One of her tags on her post was writing, for a contest!. :)

I've learned a lot about cryptocurrency and the blockchain by being on Steemit. I've read posts by the witnesses and read articles on the internet and the newspaper.

I've seen greed displayed on Steemit by one Steemian that is only on here to post about cryptocurrency 10 times a day and vote for himself.

Steemit's not a perfect platform, but I'm grateful for the people I've met. I enjoy having a place to post my nature photos and other random things and once in a while, compose a haiku.

Thanks for anyone reading this who has commented on my posts - I will try to comment a little more on your posts and other people new to Steemit!

I will continue to post the beauty of nature and hope it makes your day just a little brighter when you see my posts. I want to encourage you to go outside and look around your world and find something interesting that God put there for you to enjoy!

Also, please be kind to one another; try to understand others viewpoints on life or some specific topic. You can disagree with them; but please don't hate them. That will accomplish nothing! Try to show them love or acceptance in some way. I'm trying to do this in my own life!

Now I'm off to help weed the Butterfly Plant Garden at The Heard Museum and Wildlife Sancturay with some other volunteers on this beautiful, cool summer morning. :)

Be Blessed!

Once again thanks for following our poems. I know I am a roller coaster and still have no idea what I am doing but post whatever is ticking me.

I am so glad to read your pure posts about nature. In this I am given insight into our creator and the creation. I like the posts that you ask questions. That gives me an opportunity to learn.

You have been on Steemit longer than me. I joined in November. Take your time and have fun. I am pleased to know you and see God's glory through you.

Thank you so much for sharing your story today. Like you I always had a hard time to color in the lines. I failed many spelling tests and my least favorite class in college was rhetoric.

I enjoyed molecular biology. I don't know why I didn't study art. I think I was afraid of not getting a job. After graduation I found it really doesn't matter what we study. What matters is "WHY" we study.

Later I became a teacher in an after school academy in Korea and then studied education and started teaching in the public schools in Seoul.

I don't really teach English, I teach students. I am certified as a US teacher but found it more to my aptitude to teach in Korea. I can say this "God's calling."

I came to use Steemit because I thought it would be a good way to earn crypto. I went through the trending tags and was pretty disappointed until I came to poetry.

I liked Daniel's poems because there were no answers. It was like solving a puzzle with no solution. He welcomed my ridiculous comments on his blog and took the time to read what I was writing and supported me in so many ways. I really appreciate his projects in poetry music and other artistic works.

I also appreciate your garden and the arboredom and nature center. The flowers in your posts actually remind me of my wife. It is the purity and humble surrender to God's glory that makes these flowers beautiful. She is conservative and our views on education and life often contrast but this is why we need each other.

I'm struggling now to help my boys write their own journals. They go to Korean public schools and write in Korean. My youngest has a hard time to read and write but can sing and loves music. We sing together something silly every day.

In conclusion, Steemit is what we make it. You have found a beautiful use for it.

Likewise, it is nice to have you as a friend through Steemit! Enjoy your boys! Daniel has been so appreciative of people reading his poetry and commenting here on Steemit! The 100 Days of Poetry Challenge really took up a lot more of his time than he realized it might! It hardly left him with much time to reply back to people! I admire people that write poetry/stories/books ; my gift is with numbers - hence the programmer/math tutor jobs and flower gardening!

Thank you, for sharing your story, and the honorable mention :) I did not know @d-pend is your son, but not too surprised either.

The apple does fall far from the tree; like you, he shares beauty, love & light in his posts.

We’re lucky to have you both, here 🙏🏼

Stay blessed 😇72EB9768-7AA6-4664-96F8-EB0491E4E284.jpeg

Haha yes, not many people know we are related until now! Thanks for the beautiful pic above!

Daniel’s a special guy—gifted, precocious & a valuable member of the poetry community on Steemit. Cheers ✌🏼

My goodness, your son? @D-pend? Wow I em didn't know that, it's been amazing having you on the platform, your contents are beautiful, they radiate with so much life, I remember the first time I saw your blog, it was splendid it was through @d-pend, blog and well congratulations, it's been an awesome journey really, it's a fantastic milestones ma'm

Thank you! I tried to read some of your poems and then I would forget! Congrats on finishing the 100 Days of Poetry Challenge!

We're glad to have you here! It's good to hear that you've had a good time. And we're all thankful for @d-pend. I wouldn't be here is it weren't for him, and I see such a bright future with cryptos in general. Love seeing seeing all your pretty posts!

Haha @violetmed. Thank you for the shout out. I laughed upon remembering the story contest. You have the most beautiful pictures of all different types off flowers, butterflies and nature in general. I am so glad for your photography of the botanicals as it always reminds me of Texas and the enormous efforts the horticultural society and cities themselves endeavor to make Texas more attractive both to visitors and native Texans alike. It’s been a good year and I am so glad you are a part of it. 🐓🐓

You are welcome and thank you!

Hey @violetmed! Whoa! I totally didn't know that you are @d-pend's mother. Small world. I personally have consistently enjoyed your posts, and have watched you EXPAND/GROW on multiple fronts here. This is the MOST VALUABLE thing to be gained here, in my opinion. The second year should be even better. Keep it up...

Yep, he's the only reason I started a blog on Steemit! And thank you for your kind words!

Happy Steemit Birthday to one of my favourite people on steemit!!! So nice to be mentioned among such a stellar group of people. I had no idea that Daniel was your son. I guess I don't have to tell you how talented he is as a poet:):):) Makes sense knowing the fabulous eye for beauty his mom has. Much love to you and yours today:):):)

Thank you Pryde! I do so hope Daniel can become a published poet/author! He has a passion for writing and also composing music - you have only heard little snippets of his musical talent on Steemit! Sending a hug back to you! ❤️

I did not know how serious Daniel is about publishing, as I don’t believe he’s ever discussed it with me.

If he’s interested, I recommend that he put together a chapbook or full length collection and submit to the fine publisher of my last poetry book, Press 53, [email protected]

I’d be glad to endorse him :)

Thank you so much, I will let him know!!

My pleasure, I can also share magazine/online journal contacts (if he prefers to start there) 🙏🏼

I think any literary magazine/site or anthology would be lucky to have him.

Thank you!

I heard today that only about 6,5% of people that joined a year ago still post. We are both among them :)
Happy Steemiversary! :D Mooooore buterflies please :)

Wow, 6.5%, that's such a low number! Thank you and you continue with your flower and dry stuff posts! :)

Yeaa. A lot of people left.
We are still here :D More dry stuff coming up!

Nice pictures. I love this flower. The color is beautiful

Congrats on one year!

Thanks so much for the mention. It has been a pleasure seeing you in the tree Tuesday tag! I have also been enjoying your photography!

It's funny because I brought @prydefoltz over from YouTube and I love her poems but often I will tell her that I have no idea what the poem means, but I like it anyways lol.

Haha, I know, I still scratch my head over lots of poems. Sometimes I just try to enjoy the flow of words and just glean one or two lines that speak to me. And with my son’s poems I have to use a dictionary to look up the meaning of words he uses. :)

Congrats mummy @violetmed and many thanks to your son @d-pend who was able to convince you to join the platform. Wishing you better and fruitful years on the steem platform.

You can disagree with them; but please don't hate them

Good counsel from a mother who cares.

Enjoy mummy

Thanks for the mention! I always enjoy reading your posts as well. I appreciate our other super cool Texas connection too! :) Congrats on a year on Steemit!! I'm going to have to check out some of the others you've mentioned as I haven't seen some of them before!

Yes, it is so amazing that you found me on Steemit after you moved to Panama! I'm volunteering at The Heard Natural Science Museum and Wildlife Sanctuary as a docent for the butterfly house. You might not have seen my post from last Saturday since you were busy with your family visiting!
https://steemit.com/nature/@violetmed/white-peacock-butterfly-and-friends

Super cool! I probably would have seen you if we still lived there. We went to the Heard at least a few times a month and always did the butterfly house if it was open. :)

This post has received a 60.02% upvote from @lovejuice thanks to @mineopoly. They love you, so does Aggroed. Please be sure to vote for Witnesses at https://steemit.com/~witnesses.

Congrats my dear!

Thank you and I really enjoy your posts also! :)

Congratulations for successful 1 year!

Congratulations! I'm only one month here, but I already understand that one year on the site is a serious event! Happy next year on the Steemit :)
