I am not sure if I understood you right: you normally work without a pattern???!!! Unbelieveable! For me it is already tough to sew something when I have a pattern which I can cut out and where everything is explained... but working without one - I cannot imagine this. Perhaps my spatial sense is underdeveloped :-D
When working with a (bought) pattern I normally transfer it onto a transparent paper to get the right size and then I use this pattern to cut out the fabric. Only for my skirts I made the pattern myself, but it is a simple half circle - not much of a pattern.

This was pretty much my reaction too! It reminds me of how I envy people who can just play a musical accompaniment to any song by ear--I cannot play music by ear, I have to follow sheet music. And then the folks who could play by ear were impressed that I could read music! I was like, NO, you're the really talented ones!!
