Sacrifices: The Best things Come from Places of Pain

in #neoxianlast month

We have always been told to follow our heart wherever it leads us. In movies, in books, when characters are faced with troubling questions, asking, “What should I do? How do I know what's right?” And most times, the answer is “Listen to your heart. Follow your heart.” This notion has led us to the point where we don't listen to our minds - the logical piece.

Everyone says people should chase their dreams, follow their passions, and do only what you love. And most times, when we start doing what we love, we tend to turn it into careers and neglect the important things. Sometimes, while doing what we love, we turn it into careers and then take the joy out of simply doing our hobbies.

For instance, you love writing, but it becomes scripting or creating content for other brands, trying to meet up with deadlines. You love to design clothes, but instead, it becomes hitting sales targets and driving customers towards your brand. You love to sing, but it becomes finding a record label and producing songs that the global audience loves. Gradually, you start taking the happiness away from simply doing your hobbies. You forget that you love writing just because it helps you express. And gradually, you start resenting what you once loved. There is nothing wrong in having a job that's just a job and nothing more. It is very much okay to tolerate your job, even if you don't love it. You can tolerate your job and enjoy your hobbies on the side. Because as soon as your hobbies are turned into careers, you risk turning love into work.

That aside, here's the point I am trying to make. We have been told that it is good to put your needs above others sometimes but it is important to note that our needs might not actually be needs, but wants. This is what is called misplaced priorities. Some hobbies need money before they can be engaged in. And we all know that money matters in almost everything, if not everything. It is unwise to say otherwise. Parents who want something for their children, even though they have never had it, know it matters. Debtors know it matters. People who can't afford to travel to see their family know it matters. Anyone without it knows it matters. How awesome would it be to know you can go to the hospital for intensive treatment knowing you can afford it? How sweet would it be for a sickle cell patient to be able to afford life saving drugs worth thousands or millions of dollars, knowing they can afford it? How amazing would it be to see your family more than once a year? That's how much money matters in the scope of life.

Now, it would be an euphoric feeling to quit your job so you can go traveling around the country or world just because you love traveling. But if traveling won't help you sort out finances, it would be brave of you to stay in that job and see your younger ones through school. You might not like your job but if it's helping you sort things out, why not thug through it? It would be smart of you to stay in that office you don't like if the pay would help get your debts and bills paid. This whole thing is about being wise and smart and being considerate. We should lift ourselves out of this ideal that we are not living unless we are enjoying every second of life. When you sacrifice something, and you end up seeing results, the happiness and joy gained can't be compared. Your siblings were able to graduate from school because you stayed in that job. You were able to foot a sick relative’s bills even when you were barely tolerating your job, all these are wins that can be gained from sacrifices. Some kinds of happiness are harder won and some of the best things come from places of pain but in the end, we know it's worth it. What we win is worth the sacrifices and struggles in the end.

I like the part about misplaced priorities. It's easy to get lost in the noise and focusing on solving seemingly urgent issues, neglecting the important ones. I think happiness oftentimes have a huge cost attached to it through pain and suffering, in the grand scheme of things, some sacrifices are definitely worth it while others may not be worth it. I think it's about looking deep within and finding where we can experience the most fulfillment.
