Method and apparatus for altering a region of the Earth's atmosphere, ionosphere, and / or magnetosphere
A method and apparatus for altering at least one selected region that normally exists above the surface of the earth. The region is excited by electrons heating cyclotron resonance to thereby increase its density of charged particles. In one embodiment, the circularly polarized electromagnetic radiation is transmitted upward in a direction substantially parallel to and along a field line that extends through the plasma region to be altered. The radiation is transmitted at an electron cyclotron frequency that excites the resonance to heat and accelerate the charged particles. This increase in energy can cause the ionization of neutral particles that are then absorbed as part of the region that increases the density of charged particles in the region.
