A small Catholic parish in Giugliano, located just outside of Naples, had a rather chaotic Sunday Mass when a local 67-year-old man walked into the church with a drum. According to witnesses, he has been disturbed by the church bells, which ring loudly and frequently directly outside his home, for years. Instead of complaining, or ignoring it, he decided to hold his own counter-performance.
At a certain point during the week’s Mass, the 67-year-old man calmly walked into the church, got out a drum, and started banging it in the midst of the parishioners gathered there. The priest stopped the liturgy, the church-goers stood frozen, and the Mass was replaced with the man’s ad hoc protest for a few minutes. No one was hurt. The man left, having made his point. The police were contacted by some parishioners and they arrived shortly to gather statements.
The parish priest stated he does not plan to take action, at least not yet. Officials state that the man has already “made complaints” about the bells in the church tower. Apparently this person lives so close to the church that the continuous ringing of the bells was too much for him, and the event on Sunday was the last straw.
While things never got physical, the congregation was slightly shaken. For a few moments, the normal solemnity of a Sunday Liturgy was interrupted by one man’s disdain for the ringing bells at the church, something that is probably familiar to anyone who has lived near a church with no volume control.
