After many years of debate and controversy, the Miami Seaquarium is now closed for good. It opened in 1955. In recent years, the marine park has been known for having low standards of animal welfare, including underfeeding dolphins and keeping orcas in captivity for decades.
The death of Lolita, the orca that spent over 50 years in a small tank, was the change in public perception. It is now closed due to federal reports, increasing ethical issues, and activism pressures to end its operations.
The remaining animals, including sea lions, dolphins and penguins, are being taken to sanctuaries and rehabilitation centers. This is a long overdue change, and while the relocation of these animals does not take away from the long history of trauma the animals experienced, it is a start.
In place of the Seaquarium, there will be a sustainable marina and marine-themed promenade that does not include placing marine mammals into captivity.
This is more than a failing business closing down. This is the end of an era of selling animal suffering, in the name of entertainment. Let’s hope it is the sign of what is to come, a world where animals are no longer performers, but living beings with rights.
