Howard Rubin, a former Wall Street trader at Soros Fund Management, has been arrested on accusations of sexual assault and trafficking. According to court filings and press reports, he abused dozens of women from 2009 through 2019 within a soundproof room in his Manhattan penthouse, dubbed “the Dungeon”.

Rubin sought out the most vulnerable women, those who had suffered sexual trauma, addiction, or financial distress. Utilizing assistance from his aide Jennifer Powers, he would fly the women to New York, promising them paid employment. Upon arrival, many of the women were pressured into using drugs or alcohol and then exploited during the sexual assaults, which were violent enough that some needed hospitalization. The women were coerced into signing NDAs to maintain secrecy.

Rubin has spent over a million dollars in bringing these women to New York, as well as covering Powers' expenses, which included private school tuition (for her children) and housing expenses. Powers oversaw the daily operations of “the Dungeon” and monitored the abuse.

Rubin was not found liable in a 2017 civil suit, but he is now facing criminal charges that may result in a sentence of 15 years to life. This case shows another example of how wealth and power will often protect an abuser, while the victims are left to live with the consequences.
