in #news7 years ago (edited)

I'm sure you have seen it somewhere within the last days, post about people telling about the spam within the Slack channels of cryptcurrencies. In this article I will tell how it happened and what damage this scam made.

What happened?

A group of scammers launched spambots within the slack channels of a lot of cryptocurrency. The message they were sending within the slack channels contained a link to a clone of popular ICO websites or a copy of the very popular MyEtherWallet website. Users were asked to checked if all was still alright with their token and they had to login onto their wallets to be sure everything was still alright. As said those were fake website, so people gave away their private keys to those scammers.

Damage

The Damage caused by this scammers is at this moment estimated at $600.000, the worth of the currency stolen. A lot of people lost their Ether, but also much of the ICO's they were holding. At the moment of writing the address the resources were sended to have already been emptied. There is just about $8 left on the Ether address.

Users damaged by this scam are trying to set up a case at Interpol to sue them with cyber crime. I hope they will see anything of their losses back, or at least that the scammers will be jailed. If you were victim of the crime contact him.

Advice

  • Always type the links towards your wallet by hand yourself.
  • Don't trust anyone within the Slack chat.

Do you got any advice or useful links for victims? Please post them in the comments.
